With the brief regional scare against Vestal behind them, the Jamesville-DeWitt boys lacrosse team took another step toward a second straight state Class B championship. In Saturday’s Class B regional final against Section X champion St. Lawrence at Potsdam High School, the Red Rams did not repeat its slow start from the Vestal game, nor was there much drama as the Red Rams breezed to an 18-4 victory to run its win streak to 42 consecutive games. Half of the Rams’ goals were scored in yet another trademark blitz, this one in the first quarter as it blazed to a 9-1 lead. By halftime, the margin was 14-3, and much of the second half was played with a running clock as J-D just wanted to make sure no one got hurt. Deke Burns, with four goals and one assist, and Jordan Evans, with two goals and five assists, led a deep, well-balanced attack. Tim Edwards, Ali Akyuz and Mike Perkins also had two-goal outings, while Alex Hatem and Justin Diamond each managed a goal and two assists. Mike Engstrom also scored. It figures to be a bigger challenge this Wednesday at 5:30 when J-D takes on Section V champion Irondequoit in the state Class B semifinal at St. John Fisher College in Pittsford, near Rochester. A win here, and the Rams get to play close to home, at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium (where it won the state title in 2007), for next Saturday’s state final at 1:30.
