It was fortunate, perhaps, for the Oneida boys track and field team to see a split in the field for last Friday’s Section III Class A championships at Canastota. Still, when it came to the Class A-2 event, the Indians got a challenge from New Hartford before taking the top spot with 207.66 points to the Spartans’ 160. Vernon-Verona-Sherrill was fourth with 50 points. All over the place, Oneida was winning events, especially Eric Riley. He won the 110 high hurdles over Jimmy Moyer, 16.35 seconds to 16.52, and also took the 400-meter hurdles in 58.86 seconds as Ben Adams (1:00.89) was third. Riley cleared 6 feet 4 inches in the high jump, leaving Moyer (6 feet) the runner-up again as Rob Murphy was fourth and Steve Patricia fifth. In the triple jump, Moyer had his chance at the top, going 42 feet 2 1/2 inches to edge Riley, who went 42 feet 1 1/4 inches. David Carroll, with a throw of 45 feet 5 inches, led a 1-2-3 sweep of the shot put ahead of Dan Margo (44 feet 1 inch) and Kyle Blessing (42 feet). Of course, Blessing ruled in the discus with a big heave of 149 feet 9 inches as VVS’s Nash Robb (121 feet 4 inches) was second and Oneida’s Tyler Miller was fourth. Robb got payback by winning the long jump with 19 feet 11 1/4 inches, ahead of Moyer (19 feet 9 1/4 inches), and taking third in the triple jump. Keith Johnson, third in the long jump, got second in the 100-meter dash in 11.78 seconds and a sixth in the 200-meter dash, where Canyon Hicks (24.20 seconds) was fourth. Shawn Ano rose to second in the pentathlon, accumulating 2,567 points, while Ben Vaccaro cleared 11 feet for second place in the pole vault. In the 4×100 relay, Hicks, Terrel Wynn, Justin Klossner and Tyler Miller got second place in 47.26 seconds, with Chittenango (51.26 seconds) fourth. Oneida added a third in the 4×400 relay in 3:38.13 as Chittenango finished fifth in 3:47.11. The Indians were also third in the 4×800 (8:40.40). Connor McCarthy gained second in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10:36.91, with Will Coulter third in 11:13.59, and McCarthy also was second in the 3,200-meter run (10:14.45), with Chittenango’s John Durfee fourth. Lomonaco was third in the 800-meter run in 2:05.95. In that same 800, VVS’s Matt Femia won in 2:02.55, adding to a second in the 400-meter dash (51.59 seconds) ahead of teammate Nash Robb (53.10) and Chittenango’s Jason Given (53.64). The Red Devils’ Vinnie Bailey took fifth in the mile. They only had one Class A girls division, at East Syracuse-Minoa Thursday and Friday, where VVS had 39 points to finish seventh in a 16-team field and Chittenango (19 points) took 11th place. Alexis Kavanaugh took second in the 200 in 26.82 seconds, third in the long jump (16 feet 6 3/4 inches) and third in the 100-meter dash in 12.78 seconds. Chittenango’s Courtney Dyer, fourth in that event, used exactly one minute to win the 400-meter dash as teammate Shannon Bunce was fourth in the 3,000-meter run. Kerry Miley, Brianna Rascoe, Anna Visalli and Ronnie Judge led the Red Devils to second in the 4×800 relay in 10:15.83. Kavanaugh helped VVS to fourth in the 4×100 in 53.24 seconds. Tammy Beal was third in the 100-meter hurdles in 17 seconds flat, with Oneida’s Calley Lynch fourth in the 400 hurdles.
