On the brink of playing the Section III Class A championship game on its home turf, the Liverpool girls lacrosse team got derailed by factors both human and otherwise. The Warriors dropped a 12-10 overtime decision to Baldwinsville in the Class A semifinals, a tense affair that played out over two days in two different locations through three weather delays that first helped, then hurt, Liverpool’s cause. It all began last Thursday night, at Solvay’s Earl Hadley Stadium – ironically enough, the venue where Liverpool played home games in 2009 and 2010 while the LHS Stadium turf was getting replaced. B’ville bolted ahead 2-0 in the opening stages, only to have its momentum halted when, 2:41 into the game, distant lightning forced a 30-minute delay. When they returned, Liverpool caught up with goals from Anna Daucher and Brianna Mancini. An exchange of goals followed as the pace slowed down, more to Liverpool’s liking, and it took a 5-4 lead when Tassone faked a pass, then ran in and fired the shot home. That would be the last goal of the half, as Liverpool continued to dictate the tempo and, led by Megan Sardella, Ally Meile and Courtney Szczesniak, played superb defense. Goalie Tess Tracy was strong, too, making all kinds of point-blank stops on her way to 15 saves. Fired up by that defensive effort, Liverpool inched out to an 8-4 lead early in the second half, only to see B’ville rally and cut the margin to one, 9-8, as regulation time wound down and the tension built up. Now the lightning returned, sending everyone off the field a second time. This seemed to hurt the Warriors as B’ville’s Ashley Gentile tied it with 1:29 left to force a pair of three-minute overtime periods, then scored twice in the first OT (Claire Monnat and Meghan Cuddy getting the goals) to take an 11-9 lead. Reeling, and down one player due to three yellow cards, the Warriors were given yet another reprieve when the lightning sent everyone off the field again, this time to wait until Friday at noon to settle matters – at Liverpool, no less. Back home with one more chance to rally, the Warriors won the draw and had Mallorie O’Brien score in the waning second of the first OT to make it 11-10. B’ville answered, though, with Katie Sullivan’s goal early in the second OT period, and Liverpool would not get closer gain.
