Ryan Sayko and Ethan Wilcox gave the Skaneateles boys tennis team a reason to feel proud as, together, they won the first doubles division at this week’s Section III Class B tournament at Utica Parkway Courts – and didn’t stop there, either, also winning the state qualifier later that week. On its way to team honors, the Lakers saw Sayko and Wilcox reach the championship match with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Westhill’s tandem of Lee Detota and Cole Kelly. The championship match pitted Sayko and Wilcox against Oneida’s tandem of Trevor Haskell and Andy Parlow. Improving upon their effort in the previous round, Sayko and Wilcox, in an impressive performance, took just two sets to earn a 6-1, 6-3 victory. Thanks to this win and their season-long efforts, Sayko and Wilcox earned the top seed as the state qualifying tournament started late this week, also at Utica Parkway. Remaining hot, Sayko and Wilcox made it to the semifinals, where they had a rematch with Haskell and Parlow. It turned out exactly the same, Sayko and Wilcox winning 6-1, 6-4 as they clinched a berth in next weekend’s state championship tournament at the USTA National Tennis Center at Flushing Meadow, Queens. Yet the Skaneateles pair wanted more – and got it when, in the qualifier final, Sayko and Wilcox defeated East Syracuse-Minoa’s brother tandem of Parker and Brandon Stone in a pair of 6-4 sets. So now they go to Queens, joined by the Stones, along with Haskell and Parlow. The Section III singles team consists of Matt Nardella (CBA), Nick Westergaard (Fayetteville-Manlius) and Jake Crawford (Clinton).
