Both of the Fayetteville-Manlius lacrosse teams found little resistance as they won their Section III Class A playoff openers on Tuesday. The F-M boys took apart no. 6 seed Rome Free Academy 18-1 as, on the girls side, the Hornets’ strong all-around efforts led to a 12-6 win over no. 5 seed Cicero-North Syracuse. Having not played since its emotional 7-6 overtime win over West Genesee on May 17, F-M was fresh, rested and not about to let playoff newcomer RFA get comfortable. So as it shook off a bit of rust, the Hornets eased to a 4-0 first-quarter lead. Seven straight goals in the second period would follow, and F-M enjoyed an 11-0 halftime edge. Again, the Hornets’ defense clamped down, not letting the Black Knights get on the board until the fourth quarter, long after the outcome was settled. Kevin Lux and Ryan Simmons both had four goals, leading an attack where Ari Waffle and Derek Andrake each finished with two goals and one assist. Jim Krizman had a goal and two assists, with Chris Anklin, David Ondrich, Sawyer Dew, Bobby Hall and Scott Chase also converting. Defender Matt Moro added an assist. Across the campus, F-M’s girls lacrosse team was dealing with the same CNS squad it barely beat, 14-13, just 11 days earlier. With the stakes higher, the rematch proved far different. Dominating the draws and attacking with patience and precision, F-M never let the Northstars on the board, roaring to a 9-0 lead by halftime. CNS finally scored in the second half, but it was far too late to change the outcome. Marilyn Farrell, with two goals and four assists, led an attack where Marri Ryu got a three-goal hat trick. Alex Murphy and Cara Esposito joined Farrell in the two-goal column. Mollie Caputo had a goal and two assists, while Lindsey Trachtenberg and Morgan Same each got one goal and one assist. In Thursday’s girls Class A semifinal at Solvay’s Earl Hadley Stadium, F-M would try to avenge two regular-season defeats to top seed West Genesee. As this goes on, at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium the boys Hornets also seek payback as it meets no. 2 seed Liverpool, who beat them in a cold, wind-swept 5-4 battle on April 21
