Whatever else happens in the Section III Class A playoffs, both of Liverpool’s lacrosse teams now know they won’t have to travel too far to do their work. On a happy Tuesday night at LHS Stadium, the Warrior teams swept through their respective Class A quarterfinals. First, the Liverpool girls, a no. 3 seed, took out no. 6 seed Central Square 11-3, and right after the boys Warriors, with the no. 2 seed, used a big offensive showing to blow past no. 7 seed Henninger 20-8. All through this season, the girls Warriors, as it built a 14-2 mark, has carried, as its main goal, a chance to play the May 31 sectional championship game right on its new home turf. Central Square stood in the way as the first post-season hurdle, and it wasn’t a game the Warriors could take lightly, having only beaten the Red Hawks 8-5 on May 13, a mere 11 days before the playoff rematch. Perhaps wanting to avoid any sort of nervous moments, Liverpool was calm and efficient from the opening draw, using long possessions to wear down Central Square’s resistance. By halftime, the Warriors enjoyed a 6-1 lead, but it kept on adding to its total, more than doubling the winning margin from that first encounter. Andrea Flood, with a three-goal hat trick, led another well-balanced attack, as three others – Mary Fadden, Nina Tassone and Mallorie O’Brien – each found the net twice. Brianna Mancini and Morgan Kline tacked on single goals, and the net duties were split as Tess Tracy and Marissa Gabriel combined to stop eight of the 11 shots they faced. To earn that possible home date in the finals, Liverpool will travel, ironically enough, to Solvay’s Earl Hadley Stadium, where it played home games in 2009 and 2010 while the LHS Stadium turf was getting replaced. At the place known as “The Pit”, the Warriors will meet no. 2 seed Baldwinsville, attempting to avenge an 11-10 defeat back on May 5, with the winner facing West Genesee or Fayetteville-Manlius for the title. With the girls victory secure, it was time for the Liverpool boys to take over. Fresh off its 15-1 regular season, the Warriors were matched up with a Henninger side returning to the playoffs after a one-year absence – a team the Warriors had beaten 11-5 on May 5. Steady on the offensive end, Liverpool shook off the initial playoff nerves and enjoyed a 9-4 lead by halftime. Even with its defense shaky at times, the Warriors continued to pull away from the Black Knights until the fourth quarter, where it notched five unanswered goals, just to be sure. Matt Savlov reached double digits in points, earning six goals and four assists. And Chris Spencer wasn’t far behind, putting together one of his best varsity efforts as he finished with six goals and three assists. Joe Corapi scored four times, adding two assists, while Kyle DeAngelis managed two goals and two assists. Devin Clegg put together one goal and one assist as Austin Hope added two assists and Nick Kline also scored. Like the girls, the Liverpool boys stay close to the neighborhood for its Class A semifinal, meeting no. 3 seed Fayetteville-Manlius Thursday at Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium. The Warriors gave the Hornets (also 16-1 after dismissing Rome Free Academy 18-1 in its quarterfinal) its only loss of the season, 5-4, back on April 21. The winner returns to CNS Saturday night to face West Genesee or Baldwinsville for the sectional title.
