A wild ending to the high school baseball regular season saw East Syracuse-Minoa, Christian Brothers Academy and Jamesville-DeWitt load up on games with varying meanings. During the scramble, the Spartans and Brothers met each other on Friday, with ESM scratching out a 3-2 victory to maintain a winning record in the OHSL Freedom division. Single runs in the third and fourth innings put CBA ahead 2-0, but the Spartans tied it in the bottom of the fourth. They would stay 2-2 until the seventh, when ESM poked across the winning run against Brothers pitcher Luke Alletzhauser. Joe Greco, pitching three innings in relief of Mike Gorney, earned the win and also had two hits, plus an RBI. Ben Loder drove in ESM’s other two runs. As ESM waited for the CBA rematch, it went out last Tuesday and beat Fulton 7-1. Two-run rallies in the second, third and fourth innings proved enough for Mike Para, who went six innings for the win and struck out seven. At the plate, Cameron Lawless managed two hits and two RBIs, while Casey Sullivan doubled and drove in a pair of runs. Loder also had an RBI and, in relief of Para, struck out the side in the seventh inning to end it. A day later, CBA got its own shot at Fulton and won a 10-2 decision. It was tied 1-1 until CBA logged three runs in three consecutive innings, starting in the bottom of the fourth, to support Dave Anderson’s four-hit, 11-strikeout effort on the mound. Dan Patane hit his team’s lone home run, earning two RBIs. Sean Fitzpatrick had two hits and drove in three runs. Alletzhauser, Tim Corapi, Jack Glover and Riley Dixon earned one RBI apiece. But the loss to ESM heralded a rough weekend for CBA that included Saturday’s 6-3 defeat to ‘Holy War’ rival Bishop Ludden. Though it avoided the no-hitter Ryan O’Kane threw at them on April 11, the Brothers could not recover from the Gaelic Knights getting four runs in the bottom of the second to break a 1-1 tie. Glover took the loss, while Dixon stood out at the plate, earning a sol o home run and double as Sean Lavin added a pair of RBIs. Badly needing a win to stay in the playoff picture, J-D got it last Tuesday as it earned a 3-2, eight-inning decision over Cortland. Despite the Purple Tigers’ 10-4 mark, J-D pitcher Justin Marzella shut them down until the sixth inning. Cortland Brian Hughes did the same, but in the bottom of the sixth J-D broke through for two runs as Paul Fitzgibbons earned an RBI, as did Chris Lenish. Cortland answered by getting to Marzella for two runs in the top of the seventh to tie it. And there it would stay until the bottom of the eighth, when Fitzgibbons’ hit helped bring home the winning run. Max Bregande, pitching one inning of relief, earned the win. Dan Canfield struck for four of the Rams’ seven hits as Lenish and Tyler Kirwan scored runs and Mason Schoeneck doubled. J-D would also squeak past Fulton 3-2 on Friday to clinch that post-season berth, Matt Yonta making a trio of second-inning runs hold up as he held the Red Raiders to five hits and got 10 strikeouts. Kirwan and Eric Thompson earned RBIs in that second-inning rally. Not needing to beat Mexico on Saturday, the Rams fell to the Tigers 12-5. Here, the two sides went back and forth before Mexico broke a 5-5 tie with five runs in the fourth. In defeat, Kirway had a double and three RBIs as Yonta and Thompson also drove in runs.
