Just at the last moment, the Cazenovia girls lacrosse team put together the wins it needed to earn its place in the Section III Class C playoffs. Yet when the Lakers finally got to the sectional tournament as the no. 11 seed, its stay was a brief one, as no. 6 seed Tully ousted them 16-12 Saturday night. All through a high-scoring first half, Cazenovia kept pace, only trailing 9-8 at the break. But the Lakers cooled off after the break, unable to match the Black Knights’ frenetic pace for 50 minutes. Colleen Dougherty, with five goals and one assist, and Gabby Jaquith, with four goals and two assists, led the Lakers’ effort. Hillary Bullock added a goal and three assists as Emmajean Speer and Rebecca Wheeler also scored. Lauren Devine was busy in the net, amassing 16 saves, but could not keep Tully away all night as, for the Black Knights, Alison Bolt had six goals and Allyson McNerney added four goals and two assists. Courtney DeOrdio and Amanda Briggs helped with two goals apiece as Tully advanced to face Skaneateles in the quarterfinals and the Lakers’ season ended with a 7-10 mark. Cazenovia did have a great moment in last Monday’s game against South Jefferson in cold, wet conditions at the Sean Goggin Sports Complex. Ignoring the Spartans’ 11-3 record and its state no. 6 ranking, the Lakers pulled out a 12-11 victory. All game long, the two sides played through the mud and got little separation from each other. They were tied, 6-6, going into halftime, and as the Lakers inched in front late, South Jefferson tried to force overtime, but could not. Jaquith nearly carried the Cazenovia attack, amassing four goals and six assists. Her passes went in many different directions as Bullock, Dougherty and Speer each scored twice, with Bullock adding two assists. Kristina Kleine had one goal and one assist, with Wheeler earning the other goal. Whitley Perry led a balanced Spartan offense with three goals, but Devine finished with 12 saves. When the Lakers went to Westhill Thursday night, a different sort of drama unfolded as Cazenovia survived a high-scoring first half and fought past the Warriors 16-12. Neither defense proved difficult to solve in the first 25 minutes as Button led Cazenovia to a 12-10 advantage. Then the Lakers’ defense would take over late, holding the Warriors to two goals in the second half as Devine worked her way to 10 saves. Button would finish with six goals and three assists, taking full advantage of the attention Westhill lavished on Jaquith, who managed four assists. So did Wheeler, who had four goals and one assist, and Bullock, who improved to three goals and three assists. Jessy Silfer had two goals and one assist as Speer contributed a goal and two assists.
