If the weather would behave long enough, the Baldwinsville baseball team would get two chances to knock off major Section III Class AA contenders, only to fall just short in both of them. In the first of those attempts, the Bees engaged in a tight duel with Fayetteville-Manlius last Wednesday afternoon, only to take a 3-2 loss to the Hornets. Pat Merryweather pitched and got a 2-1 lead in the third inning as he and Brett Charbonneau both doubled and drove in runs in the early going against F-M ace Brooks Weigl. However, in the top of the fourth, the Hornets scored twice to go back in front. Weigl would settle down and hold B’ville to just six hits overall, two from Merryweather, who took the loss. Liverpool loomed next on Saturday, moved from several rainouts earlier in the week. And the eventual top seed for the AA playoffs would topple B’ville for the second time this month, prevailing by a 6-2 margin. Unlike the 13-7 slugfest at Alliance Bank Stadium on May 5, the offensive chances would prove sparse here – especially for B’ville, who got just two hits off Warriors pitcher Alex Caruso, one of them Dan Dubiel’s solo home run. That wasn’t enough, though, as Liverpool broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the third inning. Pat Wright and Corbin Gapski each finished with two RBIs as Mike St. John went 3 2/3 innings to take the loss, Terry Engels working a long relief stint. B’ville actually played twice on Saturday, and did win the other game, rolling past Class C power Pulaski 11-2. Four of those runs came in the first inning, the Bees building the margin to 9-1 by the end of the third on its way to 12 hits. Kevin Roy had two of those hits, finishing with three RBIs, while Dubiel scored twice and drove in two runs. Brett Charbonneau, Connor Martin, Theo Kaminski and Josh Demoski each drove in one runs as Nick Riley pitched six innings, holding the Blue Devils to five hits before Scott Orr went the last inning to close it out. All this left B’ville with a 12-8 mark going into the Class AA sectionals. Each round, up to the semifinals, take place this week at home sites before the June 1 final, likely back at Alliance Bank Stadium.
