What was intended as a celebration of four departing Marcellus girls lacrosse seniors turned all wet, on several levels. It was intended that Nora Barry, Ellen Brooks, Nicole Dorio and Catherine Nolan would receive post-game honors on the stadium turf following Wednesday night’s game between the state Clas C no. 3-ranked Mustangs and no. 1-ranked Christian Brothers Academy. Rain showed up, though, and pushed the ceremonies indoors – and worse yet, it came in the aftermath of the Brothers beating the Mustangs 15-9, which avenged the 12-11 win Marcellus got in their first meeting back on April 14. This, in theory, appeared an easier test for the Mustangs because CBA had seen two of its top players – Taylor Gait and Natasha Grant – suffer torn anterior cruciate ligaments in their knees early this month, knocking them out for the season. Yet the Brothers came to Marcellus determined to prove it could still make a championship run, and it bolted out to a 6-2 lead in the first half, forcing coach Dick Lundblad to use a time-out. Regrouping for a moment, the Mustangs closed within 7-6 by halftime and used Brooks’ only goal of the night to tie it, 7-7, early in the second half. From there, CBA dominated the draws, Sophie Racciatti winning most of them, and with that extra possession time blanked Marcellus for nearly 12 minutes as it built up a 15-8 edge to decide matters. Barry only managed three goals on this night, while Molly McGuane and Catherine Nolan each found the net twice. Grace Nolan joined Brooks with single tallies as Racciatti (three goals, four assists) and Caroline Webster (four goals, one assist) led the CBA charge. A night later, Marcellus was at Tully, taking part in the ‘Under the Lights’ benefit game for the Carol M. Baldwin Breast Cancer Research Fund. A series of fund-raisers surrounded the contest, from a chicken barbecue to various raffles. As to the game, Marcellus appeared well on its way to recovering from the CBA loss – until a second-half surge by the host Black Knights led to a 20-16 defeat. Each half was distinct. To start out, Marcellus appeared too potent for Tully to deal with, getting whatever it wanted on the offensive side. However, the Black Knights converted enough to stay within reach, so the Mustangs’ 11-6 edge at the break was far from safe. Sure enough, Tully erupted in the second half, outscoring Marcellus 14-5 as Allyson McNerney, with six goals, along with Alexis Drumm (four goals) and Amanda Briggs (three goals), led the rally, taking full advantage of the Mustangs’ fatigue from games on back-to-back nights. In defeat, Catherine Nolan managed six goals and one assist, with Barry adding five goals and one assist and Molly McGuane managing three goals. Grace Nolan had three assists, with Brooks and Courtney Tomeny managing single goals. So this left the Mustangs with a final regular-season mark of 12-4, with half the defeats falling within a 24-hour span.
