A different venue, but the same result as the Cicero-North Syracuse boys track and field team joined its female counterparts in knocking off Liverpool – and, in the process, grabbing the CNY Counties League National division regular-season title. In the first CNS-Liverpool track meet on the Warriors’ new oval, the outcome was in doubt until the final race, when the Northstars finally clinched a 75-66 win. The 4×400 relay closed the meet. CNS started with Shawn Webb, who ran his leg in 55.1 seconds, followed by Alex Bottorff in 55.6 seconds and Frank Volino, who needed just 53.5 seconds for his lap. Jared Walther took the anchor leg and, in 52.4 seconds, finished things off as CNS prevailed in three minutes, 36.6 seconds. Despite his team’s defeat, Liverpool’s Zavon Watkins still stood out among all individuals. He won three times on his own, topping CNS’s Chris Buchanan, 4:13.8 to 4:19.4, in the mile and zooming to victory in the 800-meter run in 1:59.6 as he also cleared 5 feet 8 inches to prevail in the high jump. In the 4×800 relay, Watkins joined Kameron Arnold, Keewan Rondinello and Anthony Ostuni for a top time of 9:27.21, this before Arnold took the 400-meter dash in 52.2 seconds and Rondinello covered the 400 hurdles in 58.2 seconds. Liverpool took four of six field events. Justin McGriff unleashed a triple jump of 41 feet 1 1/2 inches, while also winning the long jump with 19 feet 5 1/2 inches. Jack O’Connor threw the discus 117 feet. To counter, CNS had Cameron Shaughnessy clear 13 feet 3 inches in the pole vault, while Cameron Doray threw the shot put 46 feet 6 1/2 inches. On the oval, Ryan Connor took the 100-meter dash in 11.2 seconds, while Anthony Lupia ran 3,200 meters in 9:57.7 and Kareem Lee won the 110 high hurdles in 15.2 seconds. Previewing what would happen in the 4×400, CNS claimed the 4×100 relay, too, as Connor, Volino, Andrew Johnson and Avery Yarn sped to victory in 44.6 seconds. A rematch between CNS and Liverpool looms amid the larger spectacle of next Wednesday’s Section III Class AA championship meet at Bragman Stadium.
