Newly energized by its May 6 upset of Westhill, the Marcellus softball team used a series of wins to climb back above the .500 mark, while the baseball Mustangs won five consecutive games to improve its overall record to 11-3. It all started for the softball Mustangs last Monday with a 5-1 victory over Christian Brothers Academy. Having already conquered the Brothers in a 10-inning decision back in April, the Mustangs did not need extra time in the rematch, moving ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the first thanks to Tabby McBride’s two-run triple and Meghan Witkowski’s RBI single. Two more runs followed in the second, Jessie Manahan scoring Becca Fabrizio with a single and crossing the plate herself on a passed ball. Molly MacLachlan did the rest, limiting CBA to five hits and earning six strikeouts. A tougher challenge awaited Wednesday, at Cazenovia, where the Mustangs could not make it three wins in a row, falling to the Lakers 8-1. Despite seven hits, the Mustangs did not get on the board until the sixth inning, by which point the Lakers were up 6-0. Kassie Lema had two hits and drove in her team’s lone run. Marcellus quickly rebounded Thursday to beat Hannibal 9-1, taking charge right away with four runs in the first inning and two more runs in the second as MacLachlan had a brilliant all-around effort. MacLachlan had a home run, triple and double, scored four runs and finished with three RBIs as she pitched a complete game, holding Hannibal to four hits. Sophie Jackson tripled and drove in two runs, with McBride adding two hits and an RBI. The rematch Friday was even more lopsided, the Mustangs bashing Hannibal 14-3 as a five-run fourth inning helped put things away. Aside from her pitching a complete game with six strikeouts, MacLachlan reached base five times with two hits and three walks, scored four runs and earned an RBI. Witkowski and Jackson both had three RBIs as Becca Fabrizio drove in two runs. McBride, Kassie Lema and Angela Gonnella drove in one run apiece as Jessie Manahan doubled. Meanwhile, the Marcellus baseball team won five times in four days, beginning when it went to Cazenovia Wednesday and broke up the Lakers’ three-game win streak with a 10-6 victory. The Mustangs raced to a 5-0 lead by the second inning and would not trail all afternoon. Nick Sinay was three-for-four, including a double, put up four RBIs and even stole home as Taylor Vile doubled and drove in two runs. Tim Schneider also had an RBI. Jordan Smith, meanwhile, did not have a smooth outing, giving up six runs and six hits. But the left-hander amassed 13 strikeouts against just a single walk to earn the win. The Mustangs were just as impressive dismissing Hannibal 12-4 on Thursday, scoring in five consecutive innings, starting in the bottom of the second, and building a 10-0 lead before the Warriors got on the board. Phil Zdanowski pitched five innings for the win, also going three-for-three at the plate with three runs scored and two RBIs. Sinay also crossed the plate three times and earned a pair of RBIs. Mike Sniffen had two RBIs. Vile, Dan Brown and Kyle Hastings drove in one run apiece. In the rematch on Friday, Marcellus won a closer 6-3 decision, needing three runs in the sixth and seventh innings to assume its winning margin. Vile had two hits and two RBIs, with Zdanowski and Sinay both scoring twice. Schneider, who also had two hits, pitched a complete game. What followed, on Saturday, was a doubleheader sweep of Onondaga by scores of 7-4 and 11-4. The 7-4 game saw Vile hit a home run and double on his way to two RBIs as Brown, in his turn on the mound, held the Tigers to six hits. A six-run fourth inning all but decided the 11-4 game with OCS. Allie Ragovin tripled and drove in a run, with Zdanowski adding two hits and two RBIs. Mike Welsh had an impressive pitching effort, going the route with a two-hitter that included seven strikeouts.
