Normally, a 10-run inning leads to victory – but not for the Bishop Grimes baseball team in last Wednesday’s showdown with Pulaski. Despite a big head start, the Cobras could not hold on against the Blue Devils, who further expanded its OHSL Patriot division lead by rallying past Grimes 18-11. The Blue Devils led 3-0 when, in the bottom of the first inning, the Cobras went to work against Pulaski pitcher Mike Cowan. In a 25-minute marathon, Grimes pounded out 10 runs off a series of hits, walks, errors and aggressive running on the base paths. All that stopped, though, when Adam McNitt replaced Cowan on the mound. McNitt helped Pulaski out of that jam and then, over the next five innings, held Grimes to one run, giving his side a chance to rally. Pulaski chipped away at pitchers David Campese (who lasted four innings) and Matt Allan until it entered the seventh trailing 11-9. Then, with one out and two on, it erupted for nine decisive runs, the key blows coming from Riley Johnson’s two-run single and Cowan’s two-run triple. Overall, Johnson had five RBIs, leading both sides. Campese and Casey Schad each drove in two runs for the Cobras as Zac Cousineau added an RBI of his own. Leading up to the showdown with Pulaski, the Cobras’ late-season surge has mostly featured a hitting attack that was relentless in its execution. That certainly was true in last Monday’s 24-2 rout of Weedsport, where the Cobras scored four times in each of the first two innings, led 13-0 after three and caused further damage with nine runs in the fourth. Grimes had 23 hits, four each from Campese, Schad and Mike Timpano as the trio combined for 12 RBIs and 10 runs scored. Not to be left behind, Matt Allan also drove in three runs, while Josh Allan gained three hits, including a triple, and two RBIs. Cousineau also scored four runs. Right before Pulaski, Grimes fought past Cato-Meridian 4-2. Evan Pitonzo took over on this day, earning two hits and two early RBis as the Cobras led 4-1 through two innings and pitching a complete game, striking out eight while allowing six hits. Josh Allan added two hits and an RBI.
