A pair of fine Laker girls track and field teams – one from Skaneateles, the other from Cazenovia – got together last Tuesday to battle for Onondaga High School League Liberty division supremacy. And while Skaneateles ruled in the field events, it could not dent Cazenovia’s total domination on the oval, which led to a 79-62 defeat – though the Lakers did beat the third participating team, Jordan-Elbridge, by a 113-27 margin. By herself, Gabby Eckles won three events. Eckles had a season-best clearance of 5 feet 4 inches in the high jump, beat the field in the long jump by going 15 feet 4 inches and prevailed in the triple jump with 34 feet 6 1/2 inches. As this went on, Caroline Walton unleashed a discus throw of 94 feet 4 inches, also taking the shot put with a toss of 33 feet 11 1/2 inches. Also, Kaela Fiutak shared pole vault honors with Cazenovia’s Piper Gianforte, each clearing 8 feet 6 inches. However, the only Skaneateles win on the track came in the 400-meter hurdles, where Taylor Woodruff earned a top time of one minute, 13.1 seconds. Otherwise, Cazenovia swept all the honors, from the three relays to sprints to long-distance events. Six different Cazenovia runners – Ashley Winn, Ellen Burr, Hollie Marcelle, Tori Widrick, Jeanette Cudney and Paige Biviano – won those seven events, with only Winn getting two titles, in the 100 and 200-meter sprints. In the simultaneous boys meet, Skaneateles had a better time of it, beating Cazenovia 84-57 and also taking out J-E by a 91-45 margin thanks to the work of Tim Lewis, Sean Cooper and Taylor Weyneth. Before he was done, Lewis had thrown the discus 110 feet, cleared 6 feet in the high jump and, in the long jump, won by going 19 feet 10 inches. Cooper also struck for three victories. He ran the 110 high hurdles in a swift 15.7 seconds, beat the field in the 200 in 24.1 seconds and capped it by going 38 feet 1/2 inch in the triple jump. In the pole vault, Weyneth cleared 11 feet 6 inches before turning to the track and, in the 400 hurdles, winning in 1:01 flat. Sam Kriever was first in the 800-meter run (2:11.0) and James Gregg needed 54.6 seconds to take the 400-meter dash. Patrick Biver, Matt Delasin, John Watt and Ethan Johanns combined to win the 4×800 relay in 9:14.
