What was true in the first week of the regular season remains the case now, with the Section III Class C playoffs close at hand. Very little separates the Skaneateles girls lacrosse team from its main rivals for the title, Christian Brothers Academy and Marcellus, though both of them now have beaten the Lakers at home. The Mustangs pulled this off last Tuesday night, edging the Lakers 10-9 to spoil Senior Night and, at the same time, avenge a 9-8, last-second defeat to Skaneateles back on March 31. As is fitting with the close nature of this long-time rivalry, the first half saw both sides take the lead and four different ties before Marcellus edged in front, 6-5, going into the break. At this point, Skaneateles knew that, if it could ever get the lead, it would provide a major boost – but it could not do so, even as it tied the game 6-6 early in the second half and again, 9-9, late in regulation. Both times, the Mustangs quickly went back on top, steeled first by the work of goalie Renee Poullott, who at one point in the second half stopped five consecutive Skaneateles shots. Then, after Nora Barry scored her fifth goal with 5:58 left, Marcellus won the ensuing draw and killed the rest of the clock, avoiding a repeat of the Lakers’ ferocious late comeback that produced a win more than a month ago. Only Carly Davis, with three goals and one assist, and Emma Ford, with two goals and one assist, found the net more than once for the Lakers. Dianne Vitkus only managed one assist as Shelby McNeilly and Erin Callahan each had one goal and one assist. Casey Van Slyke had a goal, too, as Shannon Byrne recorded six saves The Marcellus game got moved back 24 hours so that the Lakers had time to recover from its May 7 meeting with Jordan-Elbridge, part of the Stick It to Cancer fund-raiser at Onondaga Community College. Skaneateles won over the Eagles 17-8, but it took a while to take charge. J-E slowed the game down in the first half and forged a 3-3 tie before the Lakers took off on a second-half scoring binge that included 14 goals. McNeilly, with five goals and one assist, and Callahan, with four goals and one assist, led that assault. Davis, Vitkus and Alana Navaroli each scored twice, with Ford getting one goal and one assist. Emily Bates led the Eagles with three goals and two assists.
