At last, the rain that had hampered Central New York for weeks stopped on Wednesday – but it was still too wet for Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse to square off in baseball, as they had to wait until Monday afternoon to do so. By then, the Northstars had absorbed its first loss of the season, falling 7-5 to Christian Brothers Academy last Friday night as part of the fourth annual Strike Out Lou Gehrig’s Disease Classic at Alliance Bank Stadium. CNS got into trouble in the second inning, when the Brothers scored three runs. Down 4-1, the Northstars pulled within one with two runs in the fourth, but CBA used three combined runs in the fifth and sixth innings to make it 7-3. Again, the Northstars would try to come back, pulling within two with a pair of sixth-inning runs. But CBA ace Dave Anderson pitched a scoreless seventh to help his side hang on. In defeat, Corey Burrows and Matt Dykeman each had two RBIs, with Mark Centolella also driving in a run. A night earlier, in that same event on that same Alliance Bank Stadium turf, Liverpool unleashed a lot of offense against Baldwinsville, beating the Bees 13-7. Neither side could get on the board until the top of the fourth inning, when Liverpool jumped all over B’ville pitcher Mike St. John, starting with a dropped third strike that allowed Pat Wright to reach base. Wright stole second and scored on Andrew Schreyack’s single. Luke Fischetti belted a two-out, two-run double, and after a short pop fly fell unattended between three B’ville players, the rally continued, and Liverpool got four more runs, two of them reaching home on Shawn Peake’s double. Meanwhile, pitcher Jordan Leedom held the Bees without a hit for 4 2/3 innings. He earned the win as the Warriors tacked on two more runs in the sixth and four runs in the seventh to seal it. Matt DiPaulo had a team-high three RBIs and also pitched in relief, as did Schreyaack and Alex Caruso. Perhaps realizing that it wasn’t going to get its shot at CNS, the Warriors worked out last Monday in the form of a 26-0 destruction of Central Square. All the damage was rendered in four innings, as Liverpool took a 9-0 lead through two and trampled through the bottom of the third with 14 runs before weather shortened the game to five innings. Leedom and Schreyeack each hit home runs and joined Wright with three RBIs apiece, while DiPaulo, Mike Parsons and Matt Basile each drove in two runs. Liverpool rested Saturday while CNS, not pleased with the loss it took to CBA, rebounded with a 9-2 romp over Auburn. After the Maroons notched single runs in the first two innings, Kyano Cummings blanked Auburn the rest of the way, throwing a complete game with nine strikeouts against five hits and three walks. Meanwhile, the Northstars took over by getting five runs in the bottom of the second, adding four more runs in the fifth. Dykeman worked his way to three RBIs and scored twice, while Riley Moonan and Mark Sherlock both drove in two runs. Centolella and Jake Farabee had one RBI apiece.
