By far, the biggest question for the Jamesville-DeWitt boys lacrosse team, in the near-term, was whether it could finish off an undefeated regular season again. A major obstacle in that path arose on Saturday, when Homer, ranked in the Class C top 10, paid a visit and slowed things down, but still lost to the Red Rams 8-2 as J-D won its 35th game in a row, the longest streak in the state. Knowing that it lacked the depth and firepower that J-D possessed, Homer, from the start, made sure that every one of its possessions was a long one, and that the Rams couldn’t get away. But with Matt Firman, Scott Firman, Davi Sacco and the rest of the back line in top form again, J-D held the Trojans without a goal for the entire second and third periods, during which time the rams gained a 5-1 lead. Dan DiStefano would stop 10 of the 12 shots he faced. Just three players scored on the Rams’ behalf, as Deke Burns and Alex Hatem both produced three-goal hat tricks while Jordan Evans managed two goals and two assists. The state Class B no. 1-ranked Red Rams easily made it 33 in a row last Tuesday in a rain-soaked 17-2 romp over Fulton. It was already 8-0 after one period, but J-D tacked on a 5-1 run through the third quarter. Evans amassed three goals and three assists, continuing a pattern of consistency that had included four goals and three assists against Chittenango on April 28.
Behind him, Burns and McLaren Brady and Deke Burns each had their own three-goal hat tricks. Hatem, Mike Engstrom, Adam Goss, Alex Hatem, Jeff Edwards, Ali Akyuz and Steve Aziz also scored, with Tim Edwards and Justin Diamond adding assists. Just before meeting Homer, on Friday J-D dismissed Whitesboro 20-2, bolting out to a 4-0 lead in the first period and nearly averaging a goal per minute in an 11-0 blitz before the half. Burns had 10 points overall, from six goals and four assists, and Evans wasn’t far behind, with five goals and three assists. Drew Wanamaker scored twice as Brady got a goal and two assists. Aziz also converted.
