When boys tennis rivals Oneida and Vernon-Verona-Sherrill got together on a windy Wednesday afternoon, first place in the Tri-Valley League was at stake. And the Indians survived the wind and its own slow start to fight past the Red Devils 6-1, led once again by the strong singles play of Trevor Haskell. After trailing 5-2 in the first set to VVS’s Matt McCall, Haskell reeled off the last five games of the set, then beat McCall 7-5, 6-1. Andy Parlow also won in straight sets, though he needed a first-set tie-breaker in his 7-6, 6-3 win over Dylan Duchene. The other two singles matches both went the distance. Steve Geer got the Red Devils’ lone point by rallying past Sean Butler 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, while David Rougeux helped the Indians by making his own comeback to topple Andrew Kane 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Oneida won all three doubles matches, capped when David Kann and Christian Zomback overcame a slow start to beat Ian Adams and Travis Regner 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. The Indians’ duos of Jesse Morrison-Matt Mosack and Mike Ano-Zach Wartella both won in straight sets, though Ano and Wartella worked hard to beat Devin Vallee and Ian Yahnke 7-6, 7-5. It proved even closer between rivals Hamilton and Morrisville-Eaton on Wednesday, but the Emerald Knights pulled out a 3-2 win over the Warriors. Hamilton won by sweeping all three singles matches. John Valencia handled Nick Raymond 6-0, 6-2, while Tom Bodnar got past Alex Clark 6-4, 6-3 and Alan Schult earned a 6-2, 7-5 win over Nick Peckham. In doubles, the Warriors’ tandem of Stephanie Davis and Dylan Clark got past Bailey O’Keefe and Steve Gattuso 6-3, 6-3, with Ian Kendall and Dakota Miller topping Tom Hilgenberg and Skyler Fukazawa 6-3, 6-0. Chittenango was back in action, too, on Wednesday, falling to Mexico 6-1. Caleb Manniz beat Ian Brooks 6-4, 7-5 in first singles, but Connor Toth lost in three sets to Dan Fischer 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, with David Beagle and David Bethka going to three sets before falling to Ian Roach and Brandon Warren 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
