In just two starts, Baldwinsville baseball sophomore Pat Merryweather has established his place as a pitcher that everyone else in the Section III ranks may really have to worry about. First, Merryweather won a 5-1 decision at Utica Proctor on April 14. Then, eight days later, he returned to the mound and kept Oswego completely off the board, shutting out the Buccaneers 2-0. Going in, all the attention was on the two pitchers – Merryweather for B’ville, Matt Pirro for Oswego. Pirro was a standout at Bishop Ludden before transferring to Oswego for his senior year. Yet the Bees got to Pirro in the top of the first inning, Gabe Levanti’s double driving home Josh Savacool. Following that, the duel really began as, through the sixth inning, neither side could do anything. Merryweather proved better, limiting Oswego to a scant two hits, recording nine strikeouts without allowing a walk. He also got lots of help from the Bees’ infield, which made several fine plays to keep the Bucs off the basepaths. Pirro, in his stint, struck out 12 and gave up just five hits. But when he left in the seventh in favor of relief pitcher Autie Ascenzi, the Bees struck for an insurance run – and again it was Levanti producing the RBI, his single bringing home Shay Sargent. Merryweather then got the final three outs. Then the rains returned, postponing Saturday’s game with Fayetteville-Manlius and threatening this week’s action, too, including the Tuesday showdown with Cicero-North Syracuse, whom the Bees lost to 9-3 on April 9 at Gillette Field.
