The Cazenovia Area Community Development Association and the Village of Cazenovia recently received notification that a $133,965 historic preservation grant through the Environmental Protection Fund and NYS Parks, Recreation & Historic Preservation, had been awarded to help with rehabilitation of Carpenter’s Barn. Originally constructed as a carriage barn for the Carpenter estate, the large stone structure is located at 1 Forman St. along the southeast side of Lakeland Park. Carpenter’s Barn is owned by the Village of Cazenovia and is listed on the New York State and National Registers of Historic Preservation. Its most recent tenant was CAVAC, a local volunteer ambulance service. The barn has suffered some structural damage and is greatly in need of repairs. A SIP grant of $250,000 was previously secured through Assemblyman William Magee to address the most critical portions. CACDA collaborated with the Village to complete the EPF application last spring, anticipating that any awarded monies could be used in conjunction with the earlier grant and allow a larger majority of the necessary work to be completed. Mayor Thomas Dougherty stated, “This will be a great project for the Village.”
Village Parks Commissioner Amy Mann said, “I was delighted to learn of the EPF funds that have been made available to the Village and I greatly appreciate CACDA’s assistance. Coupled with the SIP grant, these additional funds will hopefully go a long way toward restoring this special building for our community.” “We are very excited to have this grant awarded”, said CACDA Executive Director Barbara Henderson. “CACDA has been working with the Village to locate the required funding for several years. Preserving the structure is key to moving forward on a viable future use for Carpenter’s Barn.” In May of 2010 CACDA and the Village hosted an open house and community dialogue which offered unique opportunities for residents of all ages to share their thoughts regarding the treasured community landmark. More than 50 people toured the historic building and submitted ideas. To view the list, log onto cacda.net and follow the link.
