As they do each spring, the Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse girls lacrosse teams would get a measure of each other Saturday afternoon in windy, wet conditions at Bragman Stadium. To some degree, the weather affected the level of play, especially in the second half – by which point the Warriors had a comfortable enough margin to beat the Northstars 10-6 and improve to 5-1 on the season. All through the first half, Liverpool used its skill to control the game, from winning draws to organizing an offense that would produce a steady stream of goals. By the time they reached the break, CNS trailed 7-2, but it didn’t give up. All through the second half, the Northstars started to win the draws and battles for ground balls, making a run that, while spirited, proved futile in the end. Kristina Lombard emerged as the Warriors’ main threat, putting in four goals and adding an assist to give her 11 goals for the week. Lombard, Anna Daucher (two goals, two assists) and Mary Fadden (two goals, one assist), benefited from the extra defensive attention put on Nina Tassone, who managed just one goal and one assist. Morgan Kline earned the other goal. On the CNS side, Only Caitlyn Hamilton found the net twice as Rachel Bowles, Kristi Thompson, Jill Goettel and Tiffany Ryan also scored. Angelina Florzyck added an assist. Stefanie Reynolds made nine saves, one less than Liverpool counterpart Tess Tracy. This ended a 3-0 week for the Warriors. It commenced last Monday with a trip to Oswego and a hard-fought 10-5 win over the Buccaneers. Liverpool’s defense blanked Oswego in the first half, building up a 5-0 lead, so it could withstand the Bucs’ late push. Lombard and Andrea Flood both had three-goal hat tricks, while Kline, Tassone, Fadden and Brianna Mancini earned one goal apiece. Then the Warriors hosted Rome Free Academy Thursday night and torched the Black Knights with a 12-1 first-half surge on its way to an easy 19-3 victory. Turning loose, Liverpool saw seven different players notch multiple goals. Lombard scored four times, just as she would against CNS, while Brianna Centro took advantage of her increased minutes to earn a three-goal hat trick. Tassone, Mancini, Daucher and Mallorie O’Brien each scored twice, with Courtney Wrobel and Janae Garofalo adding single goals. CNS had also won twice earlier in the week, starting with a 12-6 conquest of Central Square last Tuesday where an 8-1 first half all but decided matters and allowed the Northstars to absorb the Red Hawks’ late push. Bowles, with three goals, led a deep, balanced offense where Thompson, Stefany Gale and Shelby Monteyunas each found the net twice. Ryan, Florczyk and Emily Barron also scored. Then, in Thursday’s 15-8 win over Auburn, the Northstars were steadily productive throughout the contest, with Bowles and Ryan at the forefront as, with five goals apiece, they teamed to outscore the Maroons by themselves. Ryan and Hamilton had two goals apiece in support, while Thompson got one goal. Reynolds was active in the net, recording 14 saves. With a 5-3 record following the Liverpool loss (they’ll have a rematch on May 10), CNS would visit Corcoran Monday and Baldwinsville on Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, the Warriors hosted Marcellus Tuesday in a non-league game and stays at home Thursday night to face Fayetteville-Manlius.
