Having fully recovered from its season-opening defeat to Tully, the Chittenango girls lacrosse team is now enjoying a three-game win streak. In its only outing this week, the Bears went to Homer Tuesday night and led through most of the game, hanging on to beat the Trojans 10-8. As expected, Jenna Barber and Kaitlin Antelmi anchored Chittenango’s attack, which held the ball for a good portion of the first half and steadily doubled Homer’s output, building a 6-3 lead. The Trojans didn’t go away as, led by Emma Porter, who finished with three goals and two assists, Homer inched closer, but could not fully catch up. That was because Barber continued to convert, ending up with six goals on the night, while Antelmi contributed her own three-goal hat trick. Shannen Sweeney had the other tally as Carlie Roman contributed an assist. Each of Alyssa Coppe’s eight saves proved important. A night later, the Chittenango boys team hosted Clinton and met a far different result, taking a 10-3 loss to the Warriors to fall to 0-2 on the season. Clinton decided matters with a 5-0 run through the first quarter. Chittenango did not even get on the board until the second period, then managed just one goal in each of the ensuing quarters. Deven Phelps had a goal and assist as Jacob Smith and Alex Carter also converted. Luke Bicknell and Tyler Chmielewski added assists. Adam Donner made 20 saves in the net. For Clinton, Jeff Pierce and Cory Gleasman each picked up three goals and one assist. Chittenango’s boys will get two more chances to break into the win column next week as Homer and Fulton visit, while the girls Bears went for four in a row Monday night against Cortland before an April 14 trip to Mexico.
