Baldwinsville boys swimmer Dan Burke has qualified for two different events in the upcoming New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships – and on Sunday, some of his teammates would join him, too. They all advanced to the state meet, set for March 4-5 at Nassau Aquatic Center on Long Island, by claiming quick times and high finishes at last weekend’s Section III championship meet at Nottingham High School. In the Class A 200-yard individual medley on Friday, Burke nearly won the Class A portion in a classic duel with Jack Robinson (Fayetteville-Manlius) and Cory Spado (Liverpool). Burke finished in 1:59.96, just behind Robinson (1:59.46) as Spado took second place in 1:59.78. The top three were separated by half a second. Later, the same thing happened in the 100-yard backstroke, where Burke finished in 54.81 seconds and, again, finished third. Reed Swartz (Skaneateles), who swam with the Auburn team this winter, won in 53.64 seconds as Robinson (54.11 seconds) was second. B’ville, in the Class A portion of the team event, amassed 176 points to finish eighth. West Genesee took that team crown with 341 points. Mick Tarsel, in the 100-yard freestyle, just missed the qualifying standard in the 100-yard freestyle, where he finished fifth in 49.54 seconds. He also worked his way to fifth in the 50-yard freestyle in 22.63 seconds. Burke, Tarsel, Nate Menapace and Dave Didio had a 400 freestyle relay clocking of 3:21.35 in the 400 freestyle relay, just missing (by less than a second) on Friday in its first attempt to qualify for the state meet – but they would get another shot. In the 200 medley relay, Burke, Tarsel, Menapace and Zack Akers worked their way to fourth place in 1:42.54. On his own, Menapace was sixth in the 100 butterfly in 56.27 seconds as he, with Akers, Didio and Brandon Boyd, were eighth (1:37.85) in the 200 freestyle relay. Moving on to Sunday’s state qualifying meet, B’ville took eighth place with 142 points as, again, West Genesee claimed the George Falwell Cup with 332 points. By far, the best news came in the closing 400 freestyle relay. When Burke, Tarsel, Menapace and Didio finished in seventh place in 3:20.49, it improved by nearly a second over the Class A meet – and also beat the state qualifying standard of 3:20.95, meaning the whole quartet is going to Long Island. Burke once more took third in the 200 IM, this time posting a time of 2:01.63 behind Robinson (1:58.57) and Spado (1:59.70). In the 100 backstroke, Burke matched that third-place finish as he posted 54.85 seconds and Swartz (53.06 seconds) prevailed. Tarsel improved to 22.60 seconds in the 50 freestyle and finished fifth, 0.17 seconds outside the state qualifying standard, and in the 100 freestyle he went to seventh place in 50.13 seconds. Burke, Tarsel, Menapace and Akers werefifth in the 200 medley relay in 1:41.18, just missing the state qualifying standard by 0.64 seconds. Kyle Atkinson rose to 11th place in the 100 backstroke (1:01.58) as Didio was 14th in the 50 freestyle and 19th in the 100 freestyle.
