Add four more local wrestlers to the contingent that’s on its way to this weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships at Times Union Center in Albany. Due to their season-long records, Canastota’s Zach Zupan, Chittenango’s Gunnar Brooks and Vernon-Verona-Sherrill’s Kasey Proper all have earned at-large bids into the state Division II (small schools) meet. Zupan, despite a late-season illness, has a 30-2 mark and will wrestle at 171 pounds. Brooks lost the 119-pound Section III final to Phoenix’s Nick Tighe but has a 30-8 record. Proper is 30-9 this winter, having dropped the sectional final to another Phoenix star, Laken Cook. This trio joins two sectional champions from Chittenango, Cody Carbery (96 pounds) and Wes Blanding (135 pounds), in the state meet, as well as VVS’s Tyler Kavanaugh, the sectional 125-pound champion, and Canastota’s Anthony Finocchiaro, who won at 130 pounds. Matches begin in Albany Friday morning at 10 a.m. and Saturday morning at 9:30 a.m., with the finals set for Saturday night at 6 p.m.
