All of the CBA/J-D ice hockey team’s attention was paid to the home-and-home series it played with Skaneateles last weekend, which had a chance to rocket the Brothers up the Division II standings. However, all the Brothers could manage was a split, salvaging it Saturday night by going to Allyn Arena and solving Lakers goaltender Trevor Diamond in a 5-2 victory. The two sides traded goals in the first period, CBA/J-D managing to stay even 2-2. Then it inched ahead in the second period and tacked on a pair of insurance goals in the third period. Nick Papayanakos led the way, scoring twice and adding an assist. Brendan Flanagan, Alex Hatem and Harry Kalet landed the other goals, while Dom Scicchitano, Nick Cosselman and Scott Firman earned single assists. Dan DiStefano had a strong night in the net, shutting out Skaneateles after the first period and recording 25 saves to Diamond’s 23. This wasn’t the case 24 hours earlier, when the first encounter at Onondaga Nation Arena led to a 2-1 defeat to the Lakers. It was Scicchitano scoring in the first period to put CBA/J-D up 1-0. From there, though, Diamond turned everything away as he got 25 saves. DiStefano, meanwhile, had 23 saves, but could not maintain his team’s early lead as Skaneateles used single goals in the second and third periods (Jacob Cooney and Rory Callahan scored them) to move ahead. CBA/J-D went to Oswego last Tuesday night and had a chance all the way to the end, but took a 3-2 loss to the Buccaneers. Down 1-0, the Brother struck twice in the second period. Flanagan and Cosselman scored, with Sean Lavin and Josh Rathbun earning assists. DiStefano made 22 saves, but Oswego still notched the decisive goal in the third period as Josh Sova scored twice to lead the Bucs along. This led to the home-and-home games on the weekend against state Division II no. 7-ranked Skaneateles, a turning point in the season as CBA/J-D sought to improve its playoff chances. In a season full of struggles, Fayetteville-Manlius found some comfort last Monday when it beat Ontario Bay 3-2 in overtime at Cicero Twin Rinks. The Hornets trailed, 2-1, going into the second period, but tied it in that frame, then engaged in a long standoff before getting the game-winner in the OT session. Alex Ferrara, Bob Heintz and Ryan Fero scored for F-M, with Sean Wildhack and Tommy Doucet getting one assist apiece. Ben Napierala finished with 18 saves. Then the weather got in the way, postponing games against Utica Proctor and Hamilton. F-M is set to play defending state champion West Genesee and Cicero-North Syracuse this week as CBA/J-D has back-to-back weekend games against Auburn and New Hartford.
