Sometimes, when a team reaches an especially lofty plateau, it can start forgetting about all the things that helped them reach that point – and quickly fall. That is not proving the case with the Cazenovia ice hockey Lakers, who only seem to be getting better ever since it rose to the top spot in the state Division II rankings for the first time in the program’s history. The Lakers paid a visit to Auburn’s Casey Park Tuesday night and unleashed its highest offensive total of the season, not letting up until it had registered a 10-2 destruction of the Maroons. Attacking all the way, Cazenovia had a 4-1 edge by the end of the first period, then tacked on four more unanswered goals in the second period to further secure its position. Sean Cannizzaro, with three goals and two assists, led a deep and diverse attack. Sam Lewis had two goals and two assists, with Connor Cannizzaro, Joe Nadella, Alan Baldwin, Joe Colligan and Todd Christensen also landing goals. Goaltender Mason Powell joined Lewis and Sean Cannizzaro with two assists as Kyle Murray added one assist. The Lakers, in all, took 33 shots, as Powell recorded 16 saves. Back home at the Morrisville State IcePlex to face Fulton two nights later, the Lakers remained unstoppable, bashing the Red Raiders 8-1. In the beginning and end, Cazenovia rang up goals, streaking out to a 3-1 first-period lead, then keeping relatively quiet until it exploded for four unanswered tallies in the third period. The Lakers took 47 shots, watching Connor Cannizzaro get his own three-goal hat trick, adding two assists as Lewis earned two goals and three assists. Brian Gara returned to form with a goal and three assists, with Sean Cannizzaro earning one goal and two assists and Jeff Stowell adding one goal and one assist. Nardella and John Greacen also reached the assist column. As this was going on, Hamilton continued to establish itself as a Division I playoff contender, riding Alex Brink’s latest big effort to a 7-4 victory over Watertown IHC at Colgate’s Starr Rink. A wild opening period saw the Emerald Knights inch ahead of the Cavaliers, 4-3, and as its defense tightened the rest of the way, it built a cushion through Brink’s continued excellence. All Brink did was score four times, with passes coming from Alex Foster, who earned a goal and three assists. Ryan MacDowell and Kam Mikula also converted, with Jacob Mercer joining Mikula in the assist column and Brady Carroll making 21 saves. This helped the Emerald Knights absorb a 6-3 loss to Clinton a day later in non-league play. Brink still scored twice and Foster also converted as Hamilton forged a 3-3 tie through two periods, but the Warriors took over in the third period with three unanswered goals. Mikula, Nick Koen and Brandon Thomas got credit for assists as Carroll made 26 saves and fellow goalie Noah Fry had 21 saves. Clinton saw Will Blazer and Luke Lauchert each post a pair of goals in the winning effort.
