A single point kept the Baldwinsville wrestling team from moving ahead in last Saturday’s Section III Dual Meet at Cicero-North Syracuse.
As one of 16 teams invited to the season’s most prestigious local meet, the Bees, newly-minted CNY Counties League National division champions, were in an elite category before taking to the mat in the first round against Sandy Creek.
However, the Comets would prevail, 34-33, getting all the points it needed before sitting out the last two matches because, with seven matches won, it would get the “criteria” point even if the teams tied 33-33, which they did.
Before the Bees even got on the board, Sandy Creek already had four wins on the ledger, none closer than Stephan Goins, at 145 pounds, beating B’ville’s Kurt McArdell 4-3.
Joe Senf (160 pounds) finally got the Bees on the board when he pinned Mason McNitt in 1:58, and Patrick Nasoni (189 pounds) would follow with a pin over Andy Blanding in 3:34.
Moving to the lighter weight classes, Joey Shaheen, at 103 pounds, rolled past Jake Benedict 9-1 and Tim Sposato (112 pounds) beat Zach Brown 10-1.
However, Jacob Norton (119 pounds) lost to Conner Luberto, giving Sandy Creek the clinching points so that it could forfeit to Anthony Finocchiaro (125 pounds) and John Herholzer (130 pounds) at the end.
Sandy Creek went on to lose to Fulton, 48-19, in the quarterfinal round. Fulton ended up in the finals, where South Jefferson beat them, 32-26, for its first-ever Dual Meet title.
