In vastly different ways, the Liverpool and Cicero-North Syracuse wrestling teams managed to win important CNY Counties League meets on Wednesday night.
The Warriors needed to take control of the higher weight classes against West Genesee — and did so, beating the Wildcats 33-27 as the Northstars ripped past Auburn 57-6.
Liverpool’s match saw West Genesee win five of the six contests from 103 to 135 pounds. Only Tyler Eason (119 pounds) proved an exception, fighting past Connor Grome 6-3.
But it was entirely different from 140 pounds upward. Four different times, the Warriors came through with pins, the quickest coming when Mende Cukalevski, at 152 pounds, took just 1:35 to finish off Evan Stefano.
Mike Reed, at 215 pounds, got his fall over Tom Regan at the end of the first period, while Joe Pizzuto (171 pounds) earned his pin over Nick Marco in 3:49. Dakota Inman (140 pounds) pinned Brandon Quinones in nine more seconds than Pizzuto required.
In the best individual match of the night at 145 pounds, Derek Eason kept WG’s Heitham Wady off the board in a 4-0 shutout, while Brendan Capria (189 pounds) needed lots of points to get a 14-9 decision over Luke Mersfelder.
While all this was going on, CNS was at Auburn, nearly pulling off a shutout of the Maroons as it only fell in two matches, both decisions.
Dan Ciciarelli earned the quick pin at 103 pounds, a 44-second victory over Dustin Swan. None of his teammates got close to that mark, as Andrew Holzapfel (160 pounds) and Andrew Osborne (152 pounds) both had second-period falls over, respectively, Matt Tehan and Rocco DeFranco, Holzapfel taking eight fewer seconds.
Matt Mastro (215 pounds) got his pin over Matt Mattes in 3:34, with James Segars, at 145 pounds, going to the third period before pinning Neil Halpin.
Alex Barry (125 pounds) dominated in a 9-1 win over Joe Giacona. Elsewhere, Ariel Anocedo (189 pounds) beat Dom Colella 6-2 and Matt Dunham (140 pounds) topped Brandon Fromel 7-1. Jake Murdock (112 pounds), Patrick Dyer (130 pounds) and Kiel Dyer (135 pounds) claimed forfeits.
CNS went from here to Saturday’s Cazenovia Invitational, where it rose to fourth place in a 16-team field with 109 points. Johnson City won with 168 points.
Todd Hagger won the 152-pound title, battling past Watertown IHC’s William Koelmel 8-5 in the championship match. Dyer lost the 130-pound final to Eric Munk (General Brown) and Clayton D’Onofrio reached the 285-pound final before losing to Johnson City’s Lance Moore. Mastro was fourth at 215.
Liverpool did quite well in the Mustang Duals at Marcellus, going 4-1. The Warriors beat Tully, Harpursville, CBA/Jamesville-DeWitt and the hosts from Marcellus, only losing to Lowville 37-29. Pizzuto and Derek Eason both took Most Outstanding Wrestler honors.
The Warriors visit CBA/J-D and Oswego this week, while CNS hosts Central Square in advance of hosting Saturday’s Section III Dual Meet, which gathers the 16 best teams in the area in a day-long elimination tournament.
