As Jamesville-DeWitt’s soccer teams near the Section III Class A playoffs – the girls as a defending champion, the boys as a prime contender – both secured key wins in the last week of the regular season against a neighbor and rival. In the case of the girls Red Rams, it hosted East Syracuse-Minoa Tuesday and, playing well on both sides of the ball, registered a 3-0 victory over the Spartans From the time it started, J-D (12-2) pushed into ESM’s end, and it translated into a 2-0 halftime edge. One more goal was added in the late going, though Spartans goalie Casie Auricchio had a courageous effort, finishing with 15 saves. Still, Tessa Devereaux would find the net twice, while Rene Keller emerged from her normal spot on the defense to get the other goal. Emily Nuss added an assist as Keller, Taryn Dausman, Jenna Hayward and the rest of J-D’s defense held the Spartans (6-9) to just five shots. It proved much closer when the J-D boys soccer team, about to clinch the OHSL Freedom National division regular-season title, visited ESM – but it still ended with the Red Rams on top 1-0. Busy throughout the night, J-D’s back line, led by Dan Canfield, Matt Kopp and Jesse Evensky, turned back the ESM pushes, and Zack Tanner stopped all nine shots he faced. They stayed 0-0 deep into the second half, thanks to ESM goalie Casey Sullivan making 11 saves. But in the 55th minute, Austin Roney, taking a pass from Stephen Aziz, knocked a shot past Sullivan for the game’s only goal. J-D improved to 13-1 on the season, while the Spartans fell to 9-6.
