A strong week of work left the West Genesee girls soccer team assured of both a Section III Class AA playoff berth and a winning record for 2010 as a tough homestretch loomed. The Wildcats took on Nottingham last Tuesday night and smoothly shut out the Bulldogs 5-0, displaying nice balance in its attack as it claimed a 3-0 halftime lead. Five different players – Julie Dussing, Nicole Bello, Becky Brien, Cailyn Negua and Emily Barrier – earned WG’s five goals, with Kara Datellas and Abby Connor joining Dussing in the assist column. The Wildcats’ defense limited Nottingham to just two shots. Back home Friday to face Corcoran, WG’s production doubled in the wet, windy conditions as it got to double digits and beat the Cougars 10-0. Again, balance was the story. Brien had two goals and one assists as eight of her teammates, including Dussing, Kate Corbett, Brianna McGraw, Jessica Swindon, Brianna Corcoran, Jenna Farrell, Moriah Saidel and Melissa Fumano, took turns scoring. Barrier, Erica Geremia and Andrea Francisco earned single assists. In its only action last week, WG’s boys team went to Corcoran and prevailed 4-0, pulling away after a tight first half as Stefanos Stamoulacatos, Jake Sutherland, Kyle Burke and Kyle Gojorski all put in goals. The Wildcats (10-4) too 13 shots to the Cougars’ meager total of two. Both of the Wildcat teams faced tough games Tuesday against Baldwinsville (with the girls Bees no. 1 in the latest state Class AA rankings) before finishing their respective regular seasons with Rome Free Academy.
