As it took its annual trip to Marcellus Monday night, the Westhill girls soccer team was steeled from all the tough competition it had gone through in the 2010 season. The latest big test had come last Thursday, when it visited defending Section III Class A champion Jamesville-DeWitt and put a real scare into the Red Rams before taking a 3-2 defeat. It proved an active afternoon, as Westhill got on the board in the first half, only to trail 2-1. The Warriors converted again in the second half, but so did J-D as it stayed out in front. Lindsey Lippert and Brenna Rainone earned the Warriors’ goals, with Bethany Hemmes adding an assist. Gwen Dougherty finished with 11 saves as J-D’s Tessa Devereaux led her side with two goals. Just before J-D, Westhill took care of its fellow Warriors from Hannibal last Tuesday in a 6-0 shutout. Taking 25 shots, Westhill steadily worked its way to a 2-0 halftime lead, then pulled clear in the late going. Kelly Ristoff, with two goals and one assist, led a deep attack where Hemmes, Lippert, Rainone and Ashley Cianfriglia also scored. Hemmes also earned an assist. Meanwhile, Westhill’s boys team earned a pair of shutouts, including last Wednesday’s 4-0 victory over Jordan-Elbridge where Barak BenYehuda and Anthony Scaravillo took over. Both players had two goals, and both earned the assists on each other’s scoring plays as the Warriors sprinted out to a 3-0 halftime advantage and never got caught. J-E goalie Josh Alley finished with 11 saves. Westhill then proved quite impressive Saturday in blanking Homer 5-0. Instead of two players doing all the work, five of them – Scaravillo, Connor Powell, Alex Conway, Sean Sobotka and Taylor Price – got the five goals, with Scaravillo adding two assists and BenYehuda a single assist. Having moved to 8-3-1, Westhill’s boys still had games left against Cazenovia and state Class C no. 1-ranked Manlius-Pebble Hill, while the girls Warriors will move from Marcellus to contests against Solvay and Cortland.
