Not only did the Marcellus girls soccer team have the OHSL Liberty division regular-season title sewed up, it got to play each of its five remaining regular-season games at home. To start that long homestand, Marcellus made up the rained-out Sept. 30 game against Hannibal, and got to double digits on the board in an 11-1 romp over the Warriors. Attacking all the way through, the Mustangs saw Kathryn Busa notch a three-goal hat trick as Alanna Todd and Jackie Epp each found the net twice. Just behind them, Jessie Nye, Nicole Dorio, Erin Driscoll and Corey DePerno earned single goals. Lizzy Dean had two assists as Molly MacLachlan also earned an assist. The fun continued Wednesday, against Jordan-Elbridge, with another all-out assault on the scoreboard in the course of a 10-0 shutout of the Eagles. Not content with a 3-0 edge at halftime, Marcellus kept on attacking, with 37 shots overall. And by the time it was done, seven different players had put in goals, led by Nye, who had her own hat trick as she found the net three times and added an assist. Driscoll stepped up for a pair of goals, while Alanna Todd earned a goal and two assists. Jackie Epp contributed one goal and one assist as Busa, Dorio and Elizabeth Zimmer also converted. MacLachlan, Becca Nolan and Kara Dooley notched single assists. Solvay visited on Friday night and, through some of the season’s most difficult conditions, the Mustangs won again, bashing the Bearcats 5-1. Even facing the wind and rain in the first half, Marcellus jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Busa and Nye. Tessa Pucello put Solvay on the board later in the half, but Zimmer’s goal, assisted by MacLachlan, made it 3-1 at halftime. Pulling away in the late going, the Mustangs saw Nye score again and Epp also convert, as MacLachlan tacked on a second assist and Lizzy Dean got an assist, too. Jackson finished with eight saves, the same number as Solvay counterpart Chelsea Root. Marcellus saw its boys team salvage third place out of its own tournament on Columbus Day, pulling out a 2-1 victory over New Hartford. Neither side scored in the first half. Then Cal Flitch took over in the second half, twice putting shots in the net as Nate Waite earned an assist. Tory King had New Hartford’s only goal. In the championship game, Clinton beat Red Creek 4-0 to move its record to 11-0. Marcellus took the field again Wednesday at Cazenovia, only to fall in a 1-0 decision to the Lakers at the Fenner Street complex. The Mustangs’ main problem was that it could not get any kind of attack going, with just three direct shots all afternoon. For a while, this didn’t matter, as it stayed 0-0, but the Lakers went ahead in the second half when Connor Race beat Mitch Schoenbrun (who finished with six saves) for the game’s only goal. The Marcellus boys (6-6-1) would be favored Tuesday against Solvay and play state no. 1-ranked Skaneateles, too. The girls Mustangs (13-1) clashedwith rival Westhill Monday and face Cazenovia Thursday to end its regular season.
