Everyone with the Marcellus girls tennis team was curious to find out if its stunning regular-season turnaround could carry over into the Section III Class B team tournament. For a pair of rounds, it did, as the Mustangs set a school record for victories in a season with 11 and made it all the way to the semifinals. It all started when the no. 5 seed Mustangs held off no. 12 seed Skaneateles 4-3 in Tuesday’s chilly opening round, a match where veterans and newcomers alike contributed to the win. The two sides had just met six days earlier (a 5-2 Marcellus win), but Skaneateles inched closer in this chapter. And with each side holding three points, it all hinged on fourth doubles. Two Marcellus first-year players, Grace Hunt and Tierney Clark, proved up to the big task, surviving a first-set tie-breaker and going on to beat the Lakers’ tandem of Olivia Gage and Sonja Koskala 7-6 (7-1), 6-2. Prior to that, the Mustangs earned two of the three points in singles. Colleen Stapleton handled Alaina Davis 6-2, 6-1, while Emily Gascon also won in straight sets, taking a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Katelyn Ellison. Skaneateles countered with Makenzie Herbst prevailing in first singles over Catie Nonemacher 6-1, 6-0. Skaneateles made up ground in doubles, where Kathryn Magee and Katharina Kulk routed Leah May and Renee Poullott 6-0, 6-1. Also, Emily Call and Chelsea White defeated Emily Hennigan and Hailey Randall 6-4, 7-6 (8-6). Marcellus would answer with Jessica Stottlar and Holly Grosholz beating Joy DeCastro and Avery Bird in a pair of 6-3 sets. Just 24 hours later, Marcellus went North to face no. 4 seed Carthage in Wednesday’s quarterfinal round. Again, it proved close – and again, Marcellus won, eliminating the Comets 3-2. With Nonemacher struggling again in singles, Gascon and Stapleton came through with points, as Gascon swept past Meaghan Paige 6-1, 6-3 and Stapleton gained a crucial point, rallying to beat Hannah Millich 2-6, 6-4, 6-2. Hennigan and May earned the third point, getting a 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 victory over Chelsea Major and Ally Farley. Poullott and Randall led early in doubles, but fell to Allison Brady and Maggie King 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. Finally, the Mustangs’ improbable journey ended in Thursday’s semifinal against no. 1 seed New Hartford, who beat the Mustangs 4-0 as the Spartans were leading in every match when it was called off due to rain. Still, six players qualified to appear in the individual sectional championships that start next week in Utica. While this was going on, Westhill, the no. 11 seed, went north to Adams to face no. 6 seed South Jefferson – and lost its opening-round match to the Spartans in a 5-0 decision. Twice, doubles matches went to three sets. Adrianna Carello and Casey Hagen took a 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2) defeat to Austin Stevens and Emmaline Voss, while Selina Scutari and Lauren Walters fell to Julianne Rehley and Maddy Wetterhahn 6-7 (7-5) 7-5, 7-5. Up in singles, Eileen Fleming also went to three sets, but fell to Arin Crowell 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, while Bree Sherlock lost to Rachael Bassett 6-2, 7-5, and Kate Ferrara ran into Olivia Hudson in a 6-2, 6-4 defeat.
