Now it’s a 4-0 mark for the West Genesee girls swim team as, in one of its biggest tests so far this season, it turned back the Auburn Maroons last Wednesday night in a 95-86 decision at the Wildcats’ home pool in Camillus. In the first race, the 200 medley relay, Shannon Cahalan, Kim Pedrotti, Brianna Smith and Olivia Castro put together a winning time of 2:02.68, and that was just the start of their contributions. Cahalan went on to win two individual titles, claiming the 100 butterfly and powering her way to first place in the 200 individual medley in 2:31.75. Pedrotti beat the field in the 500 freestyle in 5:33.05, while Castro, in a thrilling 200 freestyle duel with Auburn’s Micheala Elliott, won by less than half a second, 2:05.93 to Elliott’s 2:06.44. Castro also was second (56.57 seconds) to Maroons sprint star Mary Jane Leja (55.95 seconds) in the 100 freestyle as Leja also took the 50 freestyle in 26.15 seconds. Ali Miedaner gave the Wildcats a victory in diving with a total of 178.4 points. Paige Donegan notched a win in the 100 backstroke in 1:10.58, but no race could top the excitement seen in the 200 freestyle relay. Castro, working with Kristen Mooney, Emily Kamoza and Regina Stracqualursi, saw their race with Auburn go down to the last touch at the wall. WG finished in 1:47.79. Auburn finished in 1:47.80. Those extra points for winning the race would prove quite valuable. As this went on, Westhill/Corcoran’s swimmers lost 99-87 to Skaneateles, despite another series of fine individual efforts. Rachel Perry was first in the 100 freestyle (58.34 seconds), then won the 100 backstroke in a clocking of 1:04.05, while Lauren Perry took the 50 freestyle in 25.53 seconds. Imani Williams piled up 254.15 points in the diving competition. Maura Fleming swam to first in the 100 breaststroke (1:21.73) as Therese Guy, Ashley Rocker and the Perrys combined to take the 400 freestyle relay in 4:03.58. Earlier, Fleming and Williams had helped the Perrys win the 200 medley relay in 2:08.15. Rocker was also second in the 100 butterfly and 200 freestyle as Dana Ganley took second in the 200 IM. Rocker, Fleming, Williams and Erika Peterson had a time of 1:58.92 in the 200 freestyle relay as Skaneateles (1:52.41) prevailed. Westhill/Corcoran also lost 99-87 to Nottingham on Friday, even though Rachel Perry won the 100 butterfly (1:11.14) and 100 backstroke (1:03.04), with Lauren Perry swimming the 50 freestyle in 25.44 seconds and the 100 freestyle in a swift 55.56 seconds. Rocker contributed a first-place time of 2:35.93 in the 200 IM, also helping Williams, Fleming and Lauren Perry take the 200 freestyle relay in 1:52 flat. Rocker, Guy and both Perry sisters sped through the 400 freestyle relay in 4:07.82.
