Back on the course after missing the first part of the 2010 season, Baldwinsville boys cross country runner Shaun Thompson is not letting anyone get in front of him. Even defending state Class AA champion Fayetteville-Manlius could not put any of its top-flight performers in front of Thompson during last Wednesday’s head-to-head meet, as the B’ville senior won on his home course. Gradually, Thompson got away from the Hornets’ tandem of Andrew Roache and Mark McGurrin, as he crossed the finish line in 15 minutes, 54 seconds. Roache was second in 16:02 and McGurrin (16:03) settled for third place. Another Bees runner, Alec Peinkofer, ran well as he took fourth place in 16:04. Despite this, B’ville still lost 23-38 to the Hornets, who owned the rest of the top 10 spots. It proved even tougher for the B’ville girls team as F-M, the reigning three-time national champions, beat them 15-50, its top runners staying together as a group to pull away from the Bees. When B’ville traveled to Saturday’s Manhattan Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx, Thompson did not run with the boys team, but it still had some solid results in the Varsity F race. Peinkofer ran his way to 14th place in a time of 13:38.01, with Andy Fleming taking 38th place in 14:12.52. Josh Perez was 53rd (14:29.82), while Matt Pond finished 69th (14:43.55) and Ronnie May claimed 94th place in 15:17.68. Meanwhile, in the girls Varsity F race, Rachael Miller impressed as she took 12th place in a clocking of 16:30.33. Annie Peterson finished 20th in 16:46.21, while Nicole Lyons finished 24th (16:54.65) and Mallory Warner was 38th in 17:18.38. Sydney Slavik (17:58.29), Julia Johnson (18:01.56) and Andrea Moore (18:02.18) ran in close proximity to each other.
