With its biggest tests still looming ahead, the Christian Brothers Academy football team wanted to make sure that it left the home fans at Alibrandi Stadium happy one more time. So for Friday’s Senior Night affair against Central Square, the Brothers brought out a familiar script – one involving lots of points on the board – as it beat the Red Hawks 48-26 and moved its record to 5-0. CBA was playing at home for the fourth time in five weeks – and the one “road” game was right down the street at Nottingham. This lack of travel concerns may have contributed to the Brothers’ smashing success so far. And it didn’t waste time taking charge against Central Square. Twice in the opening minutes, Tyler Hamblin led scoring drives, as his one-yard sneak put the Brothers ahead and his 19-yard touchdown pass to Dan Patane made it 14-0. Briefly, the Red Hawks would respond, cutting the deficit to 14-7 – but all that did was further antagonize CBA, who promptly put up 21 unanswered points in the second period to settle things. The Brothers’ diverse running game was on display here, as Hamblin added his second and third TD’s of the night, going 28 yards for one score and adding another one-yard plunge later. In between, Manny Collins went two yards for another TD. Mike Vavonese led CBA with 66 rushing yards on eight carries and scored on a 23-yard run in the fourth quarter. Earlier in the half, Evan Adamo had returned a punt 50 yards for the Brothers’ first special-teams touchdown of the season. With the work at home done, CBA now prepared for its first real road trip – a long trek east for next Friday night’s showdown with Rome Free Academy. The Black Knights are 3-2, its only losses coming to Utica Proctor (4-1) and Baldwinsville (5-0). And CBA needs to beat RFA to make sure that its trip to Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium Oct. 16 to meet the Bees is one that will decide the Class AA-1 division regular-season championship.
