Bishop Ludden’s football team continues to hold first place in the Class C West division, winning its third straight home game Friday as Chris Davis led the Gaelic Knights past Jordan-Elbridge 34-14. Not far away, West Genesee fell to 1-3 on the season as it went to Corcoran and could not get on the scoreboard in a 27-0 loss to the undefeated Cougars. Ludden mostly leaned on Chris Davis, who would earn four touchdowns against J-E, both through the air and on the ground. With the Gaelic Knights and Eagles still 0-0 in the second quarter, Davis broke open and caught Matt Rogers’ deep pass for a 47-yard touchdown. Malik Merritt added an 11-yard scoring run just before halftime, and a pair of Davis extra points made it 14-0 at the break. Rogers and Davis connected again on a 50-yard scoring pass early in the third period to make it 21-0, but J-E would rally behind Nick Berwind’s big runs. Berwind first scored on a six-yard run, then went 55 yards for another TD as he finished with 166 yards on the night on 21 carries. With its lead cut to 21-14, Ludden again turned to Davis. In the fourth quarter, Ludden took a handoff on his own 19-yard line, found a gap and did not stop until he had outrun all 11 Eagle defenders to the end zone. That 81-yard TD run was, by far, the game’s biggest play, giving Ludden its working margin back, and Rogers (who went seven-for-nine for 158 yards) hit Davis again for another score in the late going. In defeat, J-E’s Josh Matousek led his side with 13 tackles, while Logan Smart earned nine tackles and Leland Holmes had eight tackles. Zack Stevenson added an interception. As J-E looks ahead to next Saturday’s game at LaFayette, the Gaelic Knights travel to Cato-Meridian for a Class C West first-place showdown Friday at 7 p.m. The Blue Devils are 4-0 and are coming off a 34-12 romp over APW. West Genesee went to Corcoran without quarterback Matt Naton available due to injury. Not surprisingly, the Wildcats’ offense suffered without Naton, giving up four turnovers and not getting on the board. Twice, those turnovers led to points for the Cougars, who went ahead 7-0 in the second quarter when Shaquille Breland returned an interception 43 yards for a TD, then made it 13-0 in the third quarter as Johnnie Robinson recovered a Wildcat fumble in the end zone. Delvon Adams then added a pair of fourth-quarter TDs as he picked up 126 rushing yards on 15 carries, an effective replacement for the injured Chao Porch. WG makes a longer road trip next Friday when it plays at Utica Proctor. The Raiders started 3-0 before falling to Fayetteville-Manlius 49-13 on Friday.
