In a particularly busy stretch of the season, the Chittenango and Cazenovia girls tennis teams both looked to stay near the top the standings in their respective OHSL divisions. The Bears took a gigantic step toward reaching the front of the Freedom division Thursday afternoon by toppling Jamesville-DeWitt from the unbeaten ranks with a convincing 6-1 victory over the Red Rams. Chittenango won all four doubles matches, starting with
Camen Hunn and Kaleigh Koegel beating Elena Marchetti-Bowick and Ashi Masrani 6-3, 6-2, then continuing with McKenzie Doig and Haley Landers putting together a 6-4, 7-5 win over Hannah Stefl and Nina Williams. In a long three-set battle, Kaitlyn Brant and Rose Mashie earned a 6-3, 2-6, 10-8 win over Mary Miller and Lauren Swan, while Tanya Cziesler and Brandyn McDermott rallied in first doubles to beat Katie Cieplicki and Rea Puka 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. Up in singles, Ami Petosa lost to Kyrin Pollock 6-2, 6-1, but Shelby Bogle dominated her 6-1, 6-0 win over Natalie Antosh and Sierra Sleight also prevailed in straight sets over Amanda Lee 6-3, 6-1. 7-0 last Monday afternoon. Sleight worked a bit in singles, but still beat Samantha Lobello 6-2, 6-4 as Petosa and Bogle lost just one game between them. Hunn and Koegel maintained the shutout in doubles, needing three sets to beat Anisa Husejnovic and Jacklyn Waltz 6-1, 4-6, 6-1. Brant and Mashie handled Olivia Bradley and Adisa Husejnovic 7-6, 6-3 as the teams of Cziesler-McDermott and Doig-Landers each won in straight sets, too. Wednesday’s match with Mexico was rained out. For Cazenovia, the week commenced with last Monday’s match against Westhil, where it moved to 5-0 in league play by taking out the Warriors 6-1. Laura Gregg had the toughest singles match, going through two tough sets to beat Katie Ferrara 7-6 (8-6), 7-5. Elizabeth Palmer shut out Bree Sherlock 6-0, 6-0 as Sarah Kate Glass earned a 6-3, 6-0 win over Eileen Fleming. Cazenovia also went 3-1 in doubles. Olivia Bowser and Morgan Cowherd led the way, toppling Selina Scutari and Lauren Walters 6-3, 6-4, while Marissa Barrett and Kelly Furlong earned a 7-5, 6-4 win over Adrianna Carello and Casey Hagen. Grace Gara and Sienna Lints worked to beat Kathleen Dillon and Anna Pullano 7-5, 6-4. In three sets, Claire Chanatry and Rebecca Marsch fell to Phoebe Langdon and Bridget Sherlock 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Canastota earned three straight wins last week, first taking out Westmoreland 3-2 with a doubles sweep and Stephanie Patterson’s 6-3, 6-2 win over Alissa Cornacchia, then beating Vernon Verona Sherrill 4-3 despite having to forfeit twice on the doubles side. Patterson, Tracy O’Hern and Lindsay Rosello took singles points against the Red Devils, while Molly Campbell and Alicia Mayville earned a 7-6, 6-4 win over Jessica Campbell and Tena Suchien. The Raiders then beat Ilion 4-1 on Thursday to improve its mark to 6-2 as O’Hern, Rosello and Patterson all won their singles matches in straight sets.
