A warm Wednesday of action saw the Jamesville-DeWitt and East Syracuse-Minoa cross country teams both attain early success in the OHSL Freedom division. The Red Rams pulled this off against two opponents, dominating on the girls side, zooming past Cortland 15-50 and Mexico 16-46. Ameena Dye took individual honors, finishing in a time of 21 minutes, 40 seconds, comfortably ahead of Katie Pinkes (22:13) at the wire. In all, J-D swept the top four positions, as Rebecca Bergman finished third in 22:36 and Laura Wengert got fourth place in 22:39. Avery Share was sixth in 23:23 and Amber Blom (23:48) finished seventh. Samantha Clemmons earned ninth place in 24:01, with Rebecca Doss 10th in 24:13. It proved much closer in the boys meet, at least in terms of J-D meeting Mexico. But the Red Rams beat the Tigers 25-30 and rolled past Cortland’s Purple Tigers 17-42. J-D won by getting four of the top six individual finishers, most notably Dan Driscoll, whose time of 17:56 beat Mexico’s Bryan Ross by eight seconds for individual honors. Jack Healy fit into fourth place in 18:24, with Will Hohreiter in fifth place (18:46) and Isaac Tupper sixth in 19:07. As this went on, ESM went head-to-head against Fulton and won on both fronts, toppling the Red Raiders 21-36 on the boys side and 22-38 on the girls side. Fresh off his division victory at the Vernon Verona Sherrill Invitational on Sept. 18, Mike Coogan settled into second place in a time of 18:09 here, one second behind teammate Louis Ferrone. Jesse Perrone claimed fourth place (18:45) and Paul Schneible finished fifth in 18:52 to seal the victory as Brandon Miller (19:12) and Nicholas Schug (19:31) took ninth and 10th, respectively. Gabrielle Pallotta gradually pulled away and won the girls race in 21:26, beating Fulton’s Brittany Lamie by nearly a minute. Megan Crandal was third in 22:48 as Bridget Benz got fifth place (24:06) and Liz VanDeusen claimed sixth in 24:06. Paige Courbat (24:10) and Brittany Kubecka (24:12) were right behind VanDeusen as Angela Shaw finished 10th in 25:37. Both J-D and ESM head to the Baldwinsville Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
