A season ago, the Marcellus girls tennis team managed just three victories. Now it’s topped that total just in the OHSL Liberty division, where it has become a championship contender. The latest example of this turnaround came in last Monday’s match against Skaneateles, where it knocked off the Lakers 4-3 to improve its league mark to 4-1. Marcellus won all three of the singles matches as the foundation for its victory. Catie Nonemacher defeated Makenzie Herbst 6-4, 6-3, while Emily Gascon knocked off Katelyn Ellison 6-1, 6-3. In three sets, Colleen Stapleton outlasted Alaina Davis 6-0, 2-6, 6-2. Needing just one more point in doubles, the Mustangs got it when Grace Hunt and Jessica Stottlar earned a 7-5, 6-4 victory over Joy DeCastro and Olivia Gage. The teams of Cora Bechteler-Tierney Clark, Holly Grosholz-Emily Hennigan and Leah May-Haley Randall took straight-set defeats. The Mustangs followed this up on Tuesday by beating Bishop Grimes 5-2. This included a singles sweep where Nonemacher beat Michele Godlewski 6-1, 6-3, Gascon blanked Kathleen Ecal 6-0, 6-0 and Stapleton handled Mackenzie Thomson 6-0, 6-2. Hennigan and May teamed up in doubles to beat Maria King and Alexis Kuberski 6-1, 6-4, with Grosholz and Stollar needing a third-set tie-breaker to edge past Gisella Barletta and Caroline Benbenek 6-2, 6-7, 7-6. Marcellus returned to action last Wednesday, running into Cazenovia and falling to the Lakers 6-1. It lost every match in straight sets except for first doubles, where Randall and Renee Poulott overcame a rough mid-match stretch to beat Olivia Bowser and Morgan Cowherd 6-1, 0-6, 6-4. Two days later, the Mustangs got a huge league win against Westhill, hanging on for a 4-3 decision over the Warriors. In the crucial singles match, Nonemacher needed three sets to beat Bree Sherlock 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, while Gascon beat Eileen Fleming. Westhill’s Katie Ferrara recorded a 6-4, 7-5 win over Colleen Stepleton. Moving to doubles, the Mustangs scored as Hennigan and May beat Adrianna Carello and Casey Hagen 6-0, 7-5. Grosholz and Stottlar continued that trend with a 6-3, 6-0 sweep of Kathleen Dillon and Anna Pullano.
