Both the East Syracuse-Minoa and Christian Brothers Academy cross country teams did some advance scouting this past weekend. The Spartans and Brothers ran in Saturday’s Vernon Verona Sherrill Invitational, where the Section III championships will take place Nov. 6 — and where the 2011 New York State Public High School Athletic Association meet will happen, too. By far, the main highlight was seeing ESM junior Mike Coogan earn a victory inn the Boys Varsity 1 race. Coogan was the only competitor to break the 17-minute mark, finishing his race in 16 minutes, 43.6 seconds, nearly 40 seconds ahead of Baldwinsville’s Alec Peinkofer. Overall, the Spartans were fourth in the team standings with 142 points, one point behind Whitesboro (141) in third. Louis Ferrone finished 21st, in 18:33.7, while Jesse Perrone got 35th place (19:28.1) and Paul Schneible was 39th in 19:36.2. Brandon Miller (47th, 19:48.3) and Connor Garris (55th, 20:07.7) were not far behind. CBA’s girls team moved up to third place in the Varsity 2 division, its total of 108 points bettered only by Cicero-North Syracuse (49 points) and West Genesee (62 points). Rachel Zajdel took fifth place, the senior posting a time of 20:54.4. Maire-Kate McGlynn was 16th, in 21:52.2, while Megan Pierce finished 25th in 22:44.2. Michaela Gildemeyer was 31st in 22:59.1 and Corey Hucko finished 33rd in 23:07.2. ESM was ninth in the girls Varsity I event, Gabby Pallotta doing best as she ran to 14th place in a time of 21:58.7 as Megan Crandall finished 30th in 23:06.2.
