Everything about the Fayetteville-Manlius cross country program – the championships, the awards, the accolades – is staggering. And part of the mystique is the fact that the Hornets never rest on all of its hard-earned glory. So in 2010, the girls Hornets, with many new faces in its lineup, begin a pursuit of more history, favored to win a fourth consecutive national championship to go along with the league, Section III and state honors that have become routine. And the first stop on this tour was Saturday’s Chittenango Invitational at Jamesville Beach Park, where F-M was victorious – and dominant – in both the girls and boys Division I races. In ideal running conditions (sunny, little wind, warm), the girls Hornets achieved a perfect score of 15 points and snagged six out of the top eight spots in the final running order. One of those new faces, junior Christie Rutledge, turned in the fastest time of the day in either varsity race, finsihing in 17 minutes, 20.3 seconds, well clear of sophomore teammate Jillian Fanning, who was second in 17:32.6. Katie Sischo, like Fanning a returnee from 2009, was fourth in 17:42.6, the junior closely followed by Katie Brislin, the sophomore CBA transfer who finished fifth in 17:51.4. Junior Heather Martin was sixth in 18:52.4 to close out the scoring, while freshman Leah Monsur ran her way to eighth place in 19:35.2. Not wanting to be left out, the F-M boys team, also defending state Class AA champions, won its Division I race at Jamesville Beach with 19 points, nearly flawless as Ithaca (54 points) was far back in second place Jamesville-DeWitt was fifth with 142 points. The senior tandem of Mark McGurrin and Andrew Roache went to the finish line 1-2, with McGurrin winning in 15:24.5, like Rutledge the fastest time of the entire meet. Roache settled for second place in 15:29.5, exactly five seconds behind. Sophomore Nick Ryan impressed by finishing fourth in 16:05.2, while junior Ben Thomas landed in fifth place in 16:20.1 and senior Owen Strong claimed seventh place in 16:27.5. Senior Andrew Veilleux was 10th (16:30.4) and junior Jules Wellner was 12th (16:39.5). J-D saw senior Austin Davis finish 17th in 17:06.1. Jack Healy was 22nd (17:29.1), with Dan Driscoll 24th (17:41.0) and Billy Hohreiter in 39th place in 18:48.7. The girls Red Rams were eighth in the 10-team Division II field, well behind CBA, who was fourth with 118 points. Rachel Zajdel led the Brothers, claiming sixth among Division II individuals in a time of 19:59.2, as J-D’s Ameena Dye finished ninth in 20:17.0. Helping CBA, Corie Hucko was 17th (21:15.4) and Marie-Kate McGlynn 18th (21:17.4), with the Rams’ Katie Pinkes 19th in 21:23.0. East Syracuse-Minoa saw Gabby Pallotta finish 24th in a time of 21:52.3 and Megan Crandell (22:17.0) take 30th place.
