Whether it was official or not, each of Baldwinsville’s soccer teams had a strong weekend against three different foes from outside the Section III ranks. The girls Bees were hosting a tournament on Friday and Saturday at the main school campus, but a technicality kept it from bearing full-fledged results. Since B’ville’s Friday opponent, Shenendehowa, had more games on the schedule than allowed, the contest was turned into a scrimmage, and would not count against the Bees’ won/loss record. Still, they played 80 full-fledged minutes, and the Bees beat the Plainswomen 2-1, while Cicero-North Syracuse played Rochester Aquinas to a 1-1 draw. On Saturday, the Bees would play Aquinas, it would count – and it turned into another impressive effort as B’ville shut out the Irish by a score of 3-0. Despite a lot of first-half pressure, the Bees could not score. But it stayed patient and, in the second half, broke the 0-0 deadlock and then some. Emma Firenze struck for a pair of goals, while Maggie Monnat also converted. Angelica Romeu, Jackie Firenze and Lily VanDevalk earned assists as Stephanie Lynch stopped all six shots she faced. Later that day, at the CNY Sports Centre on Jones Road, the B’ville boys soccer team dominated from start to finish in a 2-0 shutout of Vestal (Section IV) that gave head coach Tim Scheemaker his 200th career win. Both of the goals stemmed from pretty plays. Midway through the first half (the 22nd minute, to be exact), Sean Stewart fed it from the right corner – and Corey Lauko headed the ball home. Then, less than two minutes before halftime, Casey Murphy made a 50-yard run deep into Vestal’s end, then fed it to Ben Ramin, who flung a low shot into the net. The Golden Bears never got a real chance to response as Mike Guardino, Matt Miles, Kyle Mulligan, Jake Lunduski and the rest of the Bees’ defense did a terrific job of containment. Alex Bono only had to make three saves. Both of B’ville’s teams meet Oswego on Tuesday, and the girls Bees are home Friday for a key early-season showdown with its neighbors from Liverpool.
