Make that two victories – and two shutouts that evoked the mercy rule – for North Syracuse’s 15-year-old team at the Babe Ruth Baseball World Series in Monticello, Ark. In Saturday’s game against Kelso, from Washington State, North Syracuse again went the minimal distance and again pulled off an impressive shutout, crushing Kelso 13-0. This means that, in 10 innings of tournament play, North Syracuse still has not allowed a run, having whipped Seabrook (Ark.) 11-0 in the opener back on Thursday. It also marked the second time that North Syracuse pitchers put together a one-hitter. Dan Brower went the whole route, surrendering a lone single while earning six strikeouts. In the bottom of the first inning, North Syracuse got on the board, scoring twice, but really took over in the second with a five-run outburst as it went through the entire order. And when North Syracuse plated six runs in the fourth, it had enough to invoke the mercy rule for a 10-run margin, so long as it got through the fifth – which Brower did. North Syracuse finished with 11 hits, three of them from Pat Wright, who doubled and piled up five RBIs along the way. Gabe Levanti had his own double, joining Brett Charbonneau with two hits apiece as Brandon Kapcinski belted a home run. In the searing late-summer heat, North Syracuse returns on Sunday to face Bryant (Ark.), who has also won its first two games in the American division of this 12-team tournament. The winner is guaranteed a spot in the six-team elimination round, but only the first-place team in the division is guaranteed a spot in the semifinals.
