It was remarkable enough for the Corcoran boys lacrosse team to beat both Fayetteville-Manlius and West Genesee in the same season, a feat something few programs in Central New York can ever claim. Now the Cougars are halfway toward doing it again – and more importantly, are one win away from claiming its first-ever Section III Class A championship. Drawing upon good recent memories, Corcoran, the no. 4 seed, went to Cicero-North Syracuse’s Bragman Stadium Tuesday night in the Class A semifinals and took top seed F-M apart, building a five-goal lead at one point and knocking out the Hornets 13-10. With this win, the Cougars get a chance to return to CNS Friday night and try to end West Genesee’s eight-year title reign in the Class A final. The Wildcats beat Liverpool 10-5 in the other semifinal game. Of course, F-M, at 16-1, thought this would, at long last, be its year to get to the top. Having not won a sectional title since 1993, the Hornets appeared to have all the necessary elements to end that drought. But unlike every other opponent in 2010, Corcoran had figured F-M out, having gone to the Hornets’ home field on May 14 and beat them 8-6, mostly on a first-rate performance by the defense and goalie Edmund Cathers, who made 16 saves. For the rematch, Edmund Cathers would not be as prolific, recording 12 saves and giving up four more goals. But it didn’t matter, because James Cathers and the rest of the Corcoran offense tore up F-M’s usually stingy back line. From a 3-3 tie early in the second quarter, the Cougars began to take charge, scoring five more times in the half to seize an 8-6 advantage. More goals would follow in the third period as, just like in the first meeting, F-M underwent a long drought and, by the time it found the net again, was out of Corcoran’s range. Through all this, James Cathers proved unstoppable. If he wasn’t using his rare combination of size and skill to produce six goals, Cathers was flinging timely passes to teammates as he produced four assists to get a double-digit point total. Cree Cathers, with two goals and three assists, led the supporting cast as Derrick Eccles also found the net twice. Dillon Brown, Dylan Smith and Ethan Thompson also scored. F-M lost despite three-goal efforts from Mike O’Neil and Ari Waffle. Corcoran met West Genesee twice this season. It won 12-11 in overtime on James Cathers’ goal at home on April 6, then lost the rematch 13-9 in Camillus. Both times, Jon Boehm was in goal, as Edmund Cathers did not take over full-time in the net until the first F-M win.
