Both early and late, the Jamesville-DeWitt softball team pulled off last Monday afternoon what it could not do in 10 innings of work the first time around – namely, get runs against Christian Brothers Academy. Earning a key late-season win, the Red Rams beat the Brothers 8-2, and gained some payback for the 1-0 loss to CBA back on April 20 where Jenn Keeler registered 20 strikeouts – and still could not prevail. A month later, J-D broke its drought against Sheridan with a single run in the top of the first inning, then tacked on two more runs in the third to make it 3-0. Sheridan still displayed her power, recording 16 strikeouts, but again did not get any run support until the seventh inning., By then, J-D had put it away, thanks to a five-run outburst in the top of the seventh. Keeler, helping her own cause, while Rachel Honis and Christina Oaster also drove in runs. Tessa Devereaux and Mary Young joined Keeler in the two-hit column, with Devereaux also scoring three runs. Keeler lost her shutout in the seventh, but still matched Sheridans’ total of 16 strikeouts, negating the seven hits and five walks she allowed. All this seemed to drain J-D’s energies — for in the game that followed against Homer on Tuesday, the Rams got run over early in a 17-1 loss. Meghan Engstrom took her turn to pitch — and Homer hit her hard for eight runs in the first inning and six more runs in the second. It didn’t help Engstrom that the Rams committed seven errors, aiding the Trojans’ cause. CBA, meanwhile, flattened Fowler 15-1 on Wednesday, scoring twice in the first inning before a seven-run outburst in the bottom of the second really broke it open. The Brothers had 17 hits, three each from Maggie Fennell, Molly O’Brien and Kelly Bewley. Marisa Hamel got three RBIs as Bewley, O’Brien and Sheridan drove in two runs apiece. Kara Fusillo also drove in a run as Claire Gollegly joined O’Brien in scoring three runs. On Friday, CBA squeaked past Mexico 3-2, getting single runs in the first, second and sixth innings to grab a 3-0 edge, then hanging on when the Tigers made a seventh-inning comeback attempt. Alexis Mento had three of the Brothers’ seven hits, while Hamel scored twice. Sheridan allowed three hits and four walks, but her 10 strikeouts made up for it as CBA’s record moved to 12-6. CBA, as the no. 8 seed in the Section III Class B playoff bracket, meets no. 9 seed General Brown in the first round, looking to advance to face top seed Altmar-Parish-Wiliamstown in the quarterfinals. Up in Class A, J-D has the no. 6 seed, and will go straight into the quarterfinals, where it will visit no. 3 seed New Hartford.
