Everyone on the Liverpool softball team believed that its stirring comeback win over Cicero-North Syracuse May 6 at Gillette Field would rocket them to more success the rest of the season. The Warriors got to fully test that theory on Thursday, at Baldwinsville, against a Bees team basking in its own glow from winning its division against tough competition (Brewster and Vestal) at the May 8 Morabito Tournament in Binghamton. Fired up against another neighbor and rival, Liverpool ripped B’ville 9-2, leading from the start as it got three runs in the bottom of the first inning. More offense would follow — two runs in the third, three runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth — as pitcher Tiffany Sampere showed her slugging side at the plate with a home run and three RBIs, also scoring twice. Emily Dumas had two hits, two runs scored and an RBI as Briana Harris, Darci Muldoon and Beth Lamison also drove in runs. Sampere’s pitching effort included five hits and one walk allowed, plus seven strikeouts. To start the week, the Warriors got past Henninger 4-1 on a chilly Monday afternoon where Lamison continued her hot streak at the plate, getting three of her team’s 10 hits, including a pair of doubles, and scoring twice. Sarah Tram had two hits, earning an RBI as Dumas, Lucia Castellini and Carrie Stoddard also drove in runs. Sampere held Henninger to three hits, striking out 15 while allowing three walks. Then came a tense affair at Auburn, where Sampere and Ali VanGiesen dueled all afternoon before the Warriors squeaked out a 1-0 win. Much like its April 12 game at Fayetteville-Manlius (where it also won 1-0), Liverpool had a hard time with VanGiesen, whose resume this season includes a no-hitter against Henninger. In seven innings, Liverpool got just five hits, with VanGiesen earning seven strikeouts. But in the top of the sixth, Dumas tripled, then came home with the game’s only run. That was enough for Sampere, whose latest shutout involved nine strikeouts, two walks and just four Auburn hits. Lamison, Tram, Castellani and Harris had the other hits. Following early-week games with Utica Proctor and Nottingham, Liverpool closes the regular season Thursday against Fayetteville-Manlius, a team it only beat 1-0 on April 11. Since then, Hornets pitching ace Amy Bright has been part of four no-hitters, including a perfect game last Thursday against Corcoran.
