With the regular season winding down, the Baldwinsville boys tennis team wanted to make sure that the CNY Counties League National division regular-season championship did not get away — and won three times in three days to make sure that happened. Of those matches, none carried greater weight than Thursday afternoon’s showdown with 12-2 West Genesee. But with total domination in the singles ranks and a doubles split, the Bees flew past the Wildcats 5-2. Ben Weiss earned a 6-2, 6-3 win over James Buttner, and that was the closest it got in singles. Matt Funicello chased out Tanner McGuire 6-0, 6-1 and Shawn Sullivan did much the same in a 6-2, 6-1 win over Tyler Arnold. Grady Schmidt and Yaro Nieves worked in doubles to beat Mike Plunkett and Andrew Albert 6-2, 6-3, while Danny Kot and Tom Hamm smashed their way to a 6-3, 6-0 win over Eric Weller and Brad Shepard. In three sets, Kevin Thompson and Shaun Devlin lost to Erik Breault and Shane Heyn 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, with Cody Buck and Kevin Pregent falling to Lucas Hendrickson and Brett Smith 6-1, 6-1. At the start of this sequence, the Bees met Central Square last Tuesday afternoon, it gained all the points on the board in a 7-0 shutout of the Red Hawks. Sullivan went to a third-set tie-breaker, but still beat Noah Roberts 6-2, 7-6 (7-1), while Funicello dominated Will Gilbraith 6-1, 6-0 and Weiss battled past Chris Nichols 6-1, 6-2. In two close sets, Kot and Hamm beat Justin Parow and Brandon Payne, with Cody Buck and Pregent gaining a 6-0, 6-3 win over Devin Bush and Derek Lederle. Nieves and Schmidt won over Mike Allen and Bart Paura 6-1, 6-1, while Sullivan teamed with Kevin Thompson for a 6-0, 6-0 shutout of Ian Madigan and Josh Wheeler. A day later, meeting Cicero-North Syracuse, the Bees again seized control, sailing past the Northstars in a 6-1 decision. While Sullivan took a singles forfeit, Weiss did play, and beat Mark Fallinski 6-2, 7-6 as Funicello handled Kevin Tubolino 6-0, 6-2. Buck and Pregent beat Colin Crooks and Andrew Yankay 6-3, 6-0, as Nieves and Schmidt handled Dan Scharino and Anthony Mann 6-0, 6-3. Kot and Hamm put together a 6-0, 6-2 sweep of Dan Greco and Brandon Collins.
