Two things could be made out of the Christian Brothers Academy girls lacrosse team’s 10-9 defeat to Watertown Thursday at Alibrandi Stadium. On one hand, it was the Brothers’ first loss of the season, breaking what had been a 12-game win streak, and any loss is, by definition, a disappointment. However, some defeats can prove quite positive – and CBA could feel good about this game, especially the way it rallied against the defending Section III Class B Cyclones. All through the first half, Watertown, no. 13 in the current state Class B poll, dominated the draws and, with a series of consistent attacks, powered its way to a 7-0 lead. Taylor Hughes paced the Cyclones, eventually finishing with seven goals. Instead of being victimized in a rout, though, CBA regrouped and, by getting two goals late in the half to cut the margin to 8-2, gave itself some momentum that would continue to manifest itself in the second half. Gradually, the Brothers ate away at the margin, and made its biggest move in the closing minutes of regulation as a pair of freshmen entered the spotlight. Taylor Poplawski converted with 3:33 left, making it 9-8. And when Poplawski returned 38 seconds later to convert again, CBA had forged a 9-9 tie, forcing the Cyclones to use a time-out. Having regrouped, Watertown won the ensuing draw and, with 2:28 left, another ninth-grader, Brianne Arthur, beat Courtney Henderson, and the Cyclones led again. CBA tried to answer, but as it passed around the net, Watertown defender Jenna Watson intercepted it, and the Cyclones cleared it out and ran out the clock. Katie Webster went without a point for the first time all season. Poplawski and Taylor Gait each had three goals, while Caroline Webster scored twice and Michelle Wiese had the other goal. Marissa Romeo added an assist.
