A fast rise from the cellar to the top culminated for the Christian Brothers Academy boys track and field team with last Wednesday’s sweep of Solvay and Hannibal. By beating the Warriors 110-31 and the Bearcats 100-41, the Brothers finished 8-0 and alone atop the OHSL Liberty division, a far cry from its 2009 struggles. As was the case all season, a group of football players helped the cause. Tre Williams, in particular, stood out, as he set a CBA school record in the high jump by clearing 6 feet 5 inches. He also won the long jump (20 feet 8 inches) and flew 40 feet 10 inches to win the triple jump. John Dunmore, beaten by three inches in the long jump, did take the 100-meter dash in 11.5 seconds, while Amani Jackson won at 200 meters (23.6 seconds) and Matt Giannino took the 400-meter dash in 52.8 seconds. Dunmore, Amani Jackson, Fajri Jackson and Jameel Balenton posted a time of 45.3 seconds in the 4×100 relay. Brendan Smith impressed in the mile with a time of 4:37.5 and was second in the 3,200-meter run (10:03.7). Smith, Giannino, Tom Voorheis and Jared Sayles needed just 8:30.1 to win the 4×800 relay. As for the CBA girls team, it also won twice, taking out Hannibal 79-51 and Solvay 73-66. Katie Brislin swept all three distance races, taking the 800 in 2:35.2, the 1,500-meter run in 5:26.1 and the 3,000-meter run in 12 minutes flat. Betty Etheredge added titles in the long jump (15 feet 1 inch) and triple jump (32 feet 1 inch), while Rachel Zajdel took the 400-meter dash (1:03.9) and Ellen Voorheis cleared 4 feet 4 inches in the high jump. Zajdel helped the 4×400 (4:25.2) and 4×800 (11:02.4) relay teams prevail, too, as Etheredge was part of the 4×100, where CBA won in 53.9 seconds.
